Clonking from the front.
« on: March 09, 2021, 14:54:50 »
Has anyone found the reason why their front suspension "Clonks" after coming off a road hump or pot hole, the local stealer says the steering bearings are fine, sounds if its from under the "nose" or "Beak" at the front.....Bob
I have a 2009 DL650.

Somewhere in the dim and distant past I think I remember someone else having the same issue and it was something to do with the rods on the fork legs rattling on big hits. Maybe use the search function? It was a while ago.

Have a look at this. If you've got a K9 then it could be this.......however you mention a beak!

Ahhh the phantom (occasional) clonk/clunk.
Mine was  (occasionally) clonking when I bought it.
Still clonked (occasionally) after I taped and tightened the tank mount.
Still clonked (occasionally) after I greased and adjusted the steering head bearings.
Still clonked (occasionally) after I fitted a fork brace.
Still clonked (occasionally) after I fitted a Hagon springs and oil kit.
Still clonks (occasionally) no matter what the preload adjustment.
It's got no worse or better over the last nine years and twenty five thousand miles  and appears to have no noticeable effect on the handling but nevertheless can be effing annoying.
Will be simultaneously very impressed and very peed off if you succeed where I have failed and find out  :icon_exclaim: causes it.

Could be it needs some rubber washers replaced on the 2 main bolts that hold on the front nose cone, to the left and right of the headlight mounts if I rem correctly. stopped the rattle in mine anyway done it some time ago.
notice I didn't mention beak, know nothing about beaks.
