Modifying the V-Strom 250 transmission
« on: September 29, 2020, 20:09:49 »
Hi!
I am thinking of reducing the engine speed of my 250, by switching to a pinion of 15 instead of 14, the original ratio is 14 * 47.
Who carried out this operation?

Thanks for your feedback, it's a really nice bike!

There was a chap from Melbourne here briefly before chucking his tinnies out with the barbie: he had made significant changes to his gearing and was looking to go further.
Look through these posts:

Another short lived member also changed his rear sprocket:

I'd advise caution in making changes though: you seem to leave if you do alter the gearing...

Oz is a big place, he's probably just nipped out for a ride.

Hello,
Not having found a 16 tooth pinion, I set up a 41 tooth rear crown gear to have a 14 * 41 transmission instead of the original 14 * 47 one.
I will have to shorten the chain but the bike is much more pleasant, we turn 1000 rpm less for the same speed, and we do not have to change gears constantly to be in 6th immediately.
For the rare owners of this bike, personally I recommend this modification.

That's a fairly large change, but not as extreme as our erstwhile Antipodean went.

Out of curiosity, how much clearance is there, to allow for a larger size front sprocket on the DL250? What would be deemed the maximum tooth size on this model? Maybe someone could post a pix or two, of the counter sprocket area, with a stock vs the bigger sprocket?
