V-Strom 650 dodges the axe (for now)
« on: October 08, 2020, 22:56:33 »
Visordown are reporting the 650 and SV have a stay of execution until the end of next year. But it'll lose 3bhp and gain some weight. But worse than that, they're saying the updated engine to replace the current one will be a Parallel Twin  :bawl:

The parallel twin replacement might not be so bad, there is a lot of patent info floating around suggesting it'll be the XE7 engine they are currently working on.

The XE7 is rumoured to be a 700cc lump with roughly 80bhp for the naturally aspirated version, this engine also has patents suggesting there will be a turbo charged variant that'll be used to replace larger engines currently used by Suzuki.

It's not a V-Twin though is it...  :bawl: aside from my FZS600 Fazer (and the wife's briefly owned VanVan), all my bikes have been V-Twins.

It won't be a V-Strom either, it'll be a P-Strom  :haha:

Pee Storm is going to be an unfortunate auto correct.
Be sad to see the V Twin go, a bikes character is heavily defined by it's engine, be better to just introduce a new model than try to continue the name on a parallel I would think.

Parallel twins? yuk. had a z650 as a loan bike recently - worst thing I've ever ridden.
If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Old News.

The V-Strom was discontinued in 2011.

Maybe they will do a crossplane crank as on my Xt1200, sounds and feels like a v twin but more compact ?

Parallel twins are horrible. I had an F800GS for a while. Vibrated the hell out of my hands despite the best efforts of MC Technics. V engines are distinctive and that is why we love them

It's only October and the curmudgeons are coming home for the winter.

I love the engine on my XT1200. Smooth as a very smooth thing, for a 1200. They do need balance shafts to get them right with a 270° firing order, though I think that goes for all parallel twins.
Old enough to know better, but still too young to care...

Supercharging / turbocharging smaller engines is probably the way it has to go because of emission controls & targets.
But
Less weight, greater efficiency, more power offset against greater complexity and I’m whiling to bet lower longevity (inbuilt obsolescence), perfect for the PCP buying public and franchised dealers who need to keep their workshops full.
If you ignore your teeth, eventually they’ll go away

You must have had a bad one, this is rare however, the F800 is more agricultural than a Vstrom and it's not known for its refinement but My F8 GSA is pretty smooth and can be ridden for 100's of miles without numb hands/feet or backside for than matter.  :thumb:

The F800GS would be the only spoke-wheeled bike I would consider atm, would just need the funds  lol  :thumb:

Sad news. I’m never selling my yellow peril “Waspy”, it’s such a great bike.

Visordown have some details on the new engine for the SV - which is likely to be detuned for the Strom (if they keep the Strom  ) It shows a turbo and non-turbo design option... turbo P-Strom anyone?

Could be very interesting, I for one would be interested in seeing how it goes :) I read ages ago that Suzuki were working on a VVT system which looked quite clever, but seems they dropped it before it got going.
