Veek swinging arm bushes
« on: March 12, 2019, 13:09:28 »
Hello all, anybody changed the swinging arm bushes on a Veek yet?
Just had MOT done on my 2015 Vstrom 1000, advisory on play in the swinging arm, only done 10,000 miles.
Is it a diy job?

Cheers Ben
I've been asked why I have 3 bikes, well that's because I'm not allowed any more.

Is that what it said as an advisory on the certificate or did the tester actually say the swing arm bearings have definitely got free play ?
Seem strange at 10k ..? Are you sure it's not the suspension linkage he's referring to ?

As kwackboy says is the play left to right in the swingarm or up and down? Some up and down is normal on a link system.
You would have to remove the arm to change them which means the exhaust collector has to come  off plus wheel, suspension link etc.
Mine are  still  OK at 25k miles but there is  some up and down movement. Less now I've  a Wilbers shock in. The Wilbers shock has no bearing in the bottom shock eye( just a rubber bush) like the oe shock has.

20k miles on mine and there has always been vertical play in the swingarm - "They all do that Sir"

The tester demonstrated and got me to feel  the play which was side to side. I have a centre stand.

Sounds a bit cautious to give it an advisory , unless it's a lot of play. Have a look at these links, it's still possibly something that can be tightened up, even?

Always had side to side play on my Wee, never failed a test.
I think there's play between the spacers on the shaft rather than any bearing wear.

Thanks for the replies, I think I might strip, grease and torque it up and see.
The advisory was for very slight play.
Looks like I might need the special tool for one end of the pivot shaft.

Might be worth asking on the forum's Special Tools Lending Library section, here. MJC who started it hasn't been around for a couple of years now, but a few blokes have tools they might be willing to loan out?

Or even libelous. :)

I used to fail cars if I didn't like the car or the owner. Jiggling change in pockets, tracksuit bottoms (don't get me started on shell suits) and cars that had a whiff of fags usually failed. :shy:

tracksuit bottoms

Surely just an advisory, TL?

Not with me it wasn't. :icon_batterup:

The same goes with wearing a patterned tie with a patterned shirt and the least forgivable wearing brown shoes with a suit. ###

I thought it was just me that thinks brown shoes with a dark blue/black suit just looks wrong, and you see so many wearing trousers that look like they have been sprayed on!!

Sounds a bit cautious to give it an advisory ,

I commented in this original post and nothing has changed. Every year the swinging arm and suspension links get stripped, cleaned measured and regreased. Still has the play there. Still gets commented on every year by the MOT tester. No advisories as "they all do it". Seemingly there's a certain model GSX-R that uses the same components that also suffers the same symptoms.

Update...
MOT ran out just before lockdown, so left the bike scorned. On Tuesday took it for a test at the same garage, failed on squared off rear tyre, no mention of play in swinging arm.
I had loosened the pivot and greased where I could without dismantling fully, the torqued it up, still slight play.
I had actually thought of removing the centre stand! That would have made sure they couldn't have checked it.
Back this morning for a retest.

Sorry to say they'll still check the same items whether you take the centre stand off or not: they just balance it on the side stand instead. Play must have been marginal enough that the tester didn't find it excessive now you've greased it up.
