On the one hand 'self build can be fun and provide me with a spring project. I've got some trailer wheels hubs and bearings and indespension suspension units. On the other hand I don't have the facilities here and if I go over to her place I'd have to look interested when she speaks and put up with her blowing fag smoke all over me.

I am interested in fitting a tow bar to my cruiser and I looked at the freewheel web site for a trailer but the site is not responsive at present. A Motorcycle trailer would maybe enable me to go camping more often and take a good deal of stuff for a "summer away" After setting up I would unhitch and ride solo. Hmmm. now I'm thinking .....

Have you seen these?

Looking at that mono-rail trailer, with the wheel that far back on the trailer a lot of the weight would be carried by the bike again.

Not on the suspension though as it connects to the rear axle

That adds to unsprung weight which will at least effect the effectiveness of rear suspension. I guess that can be said for any trailer so it would be interesting to know which design works better.

I have seen the mono trailer towed by Goldwings in main land Europe, but most seem to prefer the larger capacity of the normal layout.
I currently have a Freewheel Pulman and one of the trailer tens posted in an earlier thread.  Had a box trailer once and it was quite good, but wanted a fiblreglass unit as I am a bit of a poser :)

Just got back fro a quick 20 mile ride with the trailer on the back.  The trailer had the following in it
2 ring gas cooker
5kg gas bottle
Single ring cooker with gas cylinder (cheapie type that uses airasol sized gas cylinders)
Bowl containing bog roll 6 sets of knifes and forks
4 collapsible chairs
Golf umbrella
pair of wellie boots
two seater collapsible chairs (so a 4 piece suite all in all :) )

These were just things that were being stored in the trailer, a freewheel pulman with a total of 20 cubic foot of storage space (that's 566 litres of space in metric).

For hose who know the area I went from Tadley to Burgfield, Grazeley, Three Mile Cross, Junction 11 of the M$ to Junction 12, A4 to Benham, A340 to tadley via Aldermaston.  A good selection of various types of road from village restricted roads to motorway (freeway).  Speed varied from 30 - 75 mph depending on the raod type with all but motorway speed limits being adhered to.

The bike handled the route well, with very little effects on handling, although the trailer could be felt when pulling away it was not that bad.

So I am know looking forward to my hols towing a trailer :)

If anyone wants to try this to see what they think, please let me know and I will see what I can arrange.  Normal rules would of course apply, you break it you mend it or buy it :)

Sorry for the late update.

Towed my trailer to the IomM fopr TT fortnight and all went without a hitch (OK one on the back of the bike).
Lots took the p1ss unitll they saw me unload my 4 sleeper tent, double air bed, big warm sleeping bag, cooker, table chair and cooker.  During the day all my stuff that was nickable went into the trailer as did my crash helmet etc after I got back to the tent.
Down side was the £85 additional fee for the ferry
Now planning for the 2013 holiday incorporating the Assen TT and the 2014 IoM TT fortnight :)  And yes I will definitely be taking the trailer on both trips.

I wouldn't mind a trailer for camping and dog transportation, I have a real problem in my head with these huge panniers..  My question is,, does the towbar have to be a full sized car one ?  couldn't a smaller one be fitted up under the seat area and have a trailer with a swan neck ,,, for want of a better description

I have a trailer the same as this one for sale -the ad has nothing to do with me I am using it for illustration only

<!-- m -->http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.com/ ... oduct/1290<!-- m -->

it is in good condition  though it would benifit from a bit of a tidy - it has a spare wheel carrier and tows extremely well - I have towed it all over europe with a BMW R100GS with no problems - it's in Liverpool

pm me if you are interested  (I also have a towbar for a R100GS paralever if anybody is interested)

OK its been a while (OK a long while) but here goes.

I took my WeeStrom to Assen complete with trailer and found it went really well.  " up and loaded up the bike was OK up to 85MPH on motorways on mainland europe )not on UK motorways obviously :) ) Mileage worked out we, dropping my MPG by around 10MPG compared to my commuting mileage. I have included a picture of the bike towing my Freewheel Pulman trailer that I use on my bikes, no panniers as this was taken for a weekend rally so everything went into the trailer no bother.
Advantages
All the weight is in the trailer so does not effect the bikes suspension anywhere near as much as it would with all the gear on the bike.
It means you can take a few (OK more than a few) bits that would not fit onto the bike with ease.  4/5 man tunnel tent, double height double air bed, Duvet with bottom sheet and real pillows, 2 ring cooker with decent sized gas bottle, spare small tent for those one night stops. More clothes than you would normally take including clothes for the wife that make things more interesting (I won't describe but will leave it to your imagination) given the size of the tent :) The trailer Iuse is I think 40 cu ft, not 40 Litres worth of luggage
More ground clearance for corners as most of the weight isn't on the bikes suspension
Disadvantages
Having to take the trailer into account when filtering.
Lower MPG
Small effect on braking and acceleration.
Lower speed limits to be taken into account/ignored, your choice
Not being allowed in the outside lane of motorways (again your choice if you want to ignore this rule)
No excuse when the wife says `can you manage to fit this suspender belt mini skirt thong and basque in?' You just know the room is there.

that's all really
