Head light fogging up
« on: September 08, 2020, 23:10:05 »
Hello everyone.

I was giving my DL650 a clean the other day and I've noticed that the main headlight cluster has fogged up when giving it a clean. I've used mildly warm water to give the bike a clean but it's the first time I've seen a headlight fog up like this. I believed the headlight unit is relatively sealed and as the weather hasn't been that cold I'm concerned that there may be something wrong with the headlights gaskets/seals.

Anyone else experienced this with their V-Strom 650?

This is a new bike and only a few months old.

Any thoughts would be welcome  :dl_hyperhysteria:

My 1000 does this also, think its the same headlight unit or very similar. It goes away when you run the bike a bit so I don't worry about it but if your bike is still under warranty it might be worth a try.

If under warranty, at least let the dealer make and stamp an entry in your service book. Should the headlight / assembly start having electrical issues at a future date (outside of warranty), there is at least a record of a very possible cause. It may just be in your favour to have this record should you have to make a claim later on.

Thanks all for your reply.

I will speak to the dealer as suggested and at least get it recorded so I have a case to argue if in the future there is issues with the headlight.

Kind regards,

Annoying isn’t it, happens on my car in the winter but I’ve never seen it on my bike. My son works at Ford (senior tech), and this is a common complaint on their cars......Telling the dealer is a good move / future issues
If you ignore your teeth, eventually they’ll go away

Fog inside the lamp is quite normal (unless the amount of fog is enormous or you see the water droplets). The lamps (in cars, I believe same in motorbikes) are not 100% sealed - there is always vent to allow the air to be exchanged: bulb heats the inside, air expands and leaves the lamps through the vent. The process goes reverse when you switch off the lamp: the air cools down and is sucked inside the lamp from the outside - this is when humid air gets into the lamp. Some of the manufacturers put small sponge on the air valve to 'block' humidity but don't know if Suzuki does it.

If moisture stays inside the headlight for too long, it will damage the mirror finish inside. If it doesn't clear by itself in one day, you should remove the bulb and use hair dryer (on half of its power) and dry it out through the bulb hole. It will take some time but be patient.
