Test Rode new 1050 XT today
« on: June 03, 2020, 14:56:29 »
Was picking mine up from its 15K service (and new radiator under warranty - sprung a slight leak LH corner) and saw the new ones in the corner of the showroom.

I asked about booking a test ride and they let me take one out there and then. Did about 30 miles. Nice ride.

The engine character has changed a bit. It revs up a little more readily, and spins up quicker as well. The 4K torque peak definitely gone, and with the fbw fuelling this makes it a joy to ride through town - as you are not constantly on the edge of the 'surge'. It'll poodle around in 3rd 30 no lumps bumps all smooth.

Tried the hill hold, it works - nice actually to use. The cruise control is fine too - but the location of the button was a struggle to hit with me thumb without coming off the throttle. Ran in A mode all the time, throttle response was perfect - as is the new screen and mirrors. No buffeting yay!

Seat is narrower and a bit harder but no issue for me, and cockpit feels more premium overall. Not sure I like the dash, too cluttered.  Didn't notice extra weight at all to be honest, so any power increase must make up for it. I couldn't open it up too much as bike had only 39 miles on it - but it is a touch more spicy than the L7. Pegs are nicer too.

I'll have another go in a month or so when I've ridden a few others before deciding to pull trigger.

Oh and the new beak is nicer (reaches for tin hat).

Overall was quite impressed.

If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Good summary on the new XT, I’m curious what other bikes are on your shortlist?
If you ignore your teeth, eventually they’ll go away

What are you thoughts on the screen?  It looks as though it is just an up and down adjustment as opposed to the previous model which, had fore and aft type adjustment.  With a dedicated Suzuki touring screen (the one with the aerofoil attachment) the screen's position on mine (2019) is nicely raked back towards me, giving me smooth low noise airflow.  My experience with upright screens has generally been, the more upright the more noise.

It sounds like a nice bike just hope the screen hasn't messed things up for some.

What about mirrors vibration? How is the rear view on various speeds?

When I took one out whilst mine was in for service, I had problems with the mirrors, all I could see was my elbows, no good. The screen was really bad, just a round thing in front  of me which deflected the wind around it and then onto me. Did not like it at all but overall the bike was good.

I have aftermarket mirrors on extenders on my '18 1000 and I have problem with glass vibration on higher speeds but rear view is great as I don't see my elbows. I was thinking about buying mirrors for 1050 and putting them on extenders.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yes the screen looks like it would be a problem for me.

Out of interest, what was your experience upon coming off throttle?  Smoother and less pronounced a cut

Apologies for slow response to Q's.

Other manufacturers on my shortlist - BMW+KTM. Was liking the idea of a 1050 adventure R till I realised they don't sell them anymore.  Will try the BMW xr as well as I've never ridden it.

Screen and mirrors were OK actually, - not as great a view as the current saucepans, but no air cavitation in the cockpit - so an imprivement for me. The std 17 combo of screen and saucepans is truly awful above 60.

I thought the throttling and fueling was much improved over my 17 in most areas to be honest. Especially low rpm/speeds. The CC button is pain though unless you have really long thumbs.

Seat is certainly harder - (and narrower) but with age I have a few more pounds of 'derriere cushioning' so not expecting an issue here.
If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Brand new KTM 1090 Adventure S with 2 years warranty. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KTM-1090-Adventure-Sport/233512016063?hash=item365e6698bf:g:X6YAAOSwUSZZlbet

The 1050 was a short lived model aimed at A2 riders, the 1090 has the same size engine with different cams and ecu.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Had forty minutes on it today.

As has been written and talk about elsewhere, I did feel a noticeable improvement of the suspension (especially front) over the out going model. I do believe this helps with the clearer image in the mirrors I enjoyed throughout the test.  Depending on the road, my 1000 can have a zizzy image reflected in the mirrors even off throttle.

The example 1050 I rode felt vibey over mine. Nothing terrible but significant enough to feel it at the groin, backside and pegs.

I didn’t spend long enough with it to work out the throttle mapping options. Not sure if other modes would have changed what I felt... as for me, I tuned into a touch of surging and pulling at a constant 30mph which, is not evident on mine in either third or second gear. Having said that, the abruptness when closing the throttle has been improved on the 1050.

I found the screen okay actually. Not quiet, but way better than I had anticipated; I‘m  six feet and a bit.

As a mature adult, some of the meter read outs seemed a touch too small and dare I say quite cluttered. Strangely I paid no attention to the rev counter. I suppose I might if I owned it and became used to things, but it just seemed to be inconspicuous with all the other read outs crammed in and vying for space

I think good deals will be achievable over the RRP. I don’t need to buy one just yet. I might one day and maybe by then, the looks of it will be a bit less challenging for my eye  :)

Deals are starting. I was in a dealer on Saturday who has a 1050XT with a centre stand, hand guards and engine bars for £10,125. It was their demo bike and so is registered, but then Covid arrived and it has sat in the showroom for 3 months. Zero miles.

The only problem is that it is yellow, not red otherwise I would have been very tempted.

In trawling the internet I also found one of the last 2019 XT models - Yellow, full metal luggage, engine bars for £9,750, which I guess is £9,500 if you are standing there with a handful of cash
