Wiring DRL’s
« on: April 07, 2020, 13:27:05 »
Hello all,

I’ve purchased one of Bigpie’s auxiliary fuse boxes - firstly, I’d like to say thanks for the facility of the forum and secondly to Bigpie for helping fellow forumer’s out with this wiring solution.

So, here’s my question:

I don’t want to install a switch with my DRL’s - In the case, am I correct in saying that the lights can be wired directly into Bigpie’s fuse box, without a relay and switch?

My reason for asking is because the pre-fabricated wiring harnesses on Amazon/eBay pretty much all have relays and switches.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes they can be wired directly to a Bigpie fuse box and will come on/off with the bike's electrics  :thumb:
(To add, No need for switches/relays)

Just be careful as the most of DRL's are too strong to use at night. Without the switch you can't turn them off and they may disturbe oncoming traffic at night.
That is the reason I have one pair of DRL's for day riding and the other pair with heavy dark filter for night riding.

That's a good point bosnjo.

I have my spotlights angled downwards to stop blinding other road users.

I have cheap chinese DRL's. They are so strong that both pairs have to point down, way below low beam because, for example, I tested the pair for day ride pointing in the same hight as low beam and it was blinding oncoming traffic. I tested it with my friend aproaching from oposite direction in bright sunny day. He said it was the same as someone was driving a car with high beams on during a day. So now they are pointing few cm's below low beam, pointing at white wall from 5 meters away.

I bought a pair of the brightest LED lights I could find. Wired them up as DRL with ignition.
They are way too bright. 20W each.
Problem with cheap ones is the lack of beam pattern. Good in a way as DRL because the light is scattered in all directions and hence noticeable from wide angles. The downside is you have little control over the beam and have to tilt them right down to avoid dazzling people, and that is in daylight.
Might have to re-think mine while I've got time on my hands.
