L8 XT1000 chain replacement.
« on: March 25, 2020, 16:11:35 »
Well, as everything is lockdown, I thought I'd replace the chain as it's done 23K miles. Sprockets looked good so just a beefy chain from DID was ordered. I did the research, everything said the XT has a 525 x 120 chain, so I order the VX variant

Took the old chain off, it's 116 links, and yup, the new chain is waaaaay too long  :icon_batterup:
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

Extend the swinging arm and the seat, and you can carry a pillion whilst social distancing.

Can't you shorten it?
I thought the problem was when they don't have enough links...
DL1000 2017 white
DL1000 2014 red (sold)
DL650 2012 white (sold)

Yes the kit I ordered, a specific kit for my model year vstrom (2015) came with a 120 link chain also. Simple enough to shorten it.

It's cheaper for the retailer to carry a load of 120 link chains in stock rather than all the pitch/link options on the shelf.

The suppliers of chains figure this one too and usually the wholesale cost for the longer chains are less due to greater demand, so buy in bulk.

The point of the post is that info for my particular vstrom 2018 1000XT is wrong  all over the internet- so only order 525x116 if you have this model.
