DL1000 rough below 2500 RPM
« on: March 24, 2020, 17:08:38 »
Hello there, I bought my DL1000 last October, it is a 65 registered DL1000 AL4 with a 'GPR' exhaust fitted- [sounds lovely]. Though the bike seems perfect, it runs rough below 2500 RPM meaning that I need to change down to bring the revs up. Above 2500 it is fine and pulls smoothly. Starting and tickover is fine.
Is this an unfortunate characteristic of this engine or is there something not right ?
It has done 12,000 miles.
Thanks in advance,
Tony.

Possibly the cylinders are out of sync (feel it at low rpm), so perhaps the TPS needs a reset (that you can search for), or perhaps you can get the throttle bodies sync'd with something like a www.healtech-electronics.com/est  (not cheap).

V1000 is choppy at low RPM, so it might just be that  lol
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

I have the same issue when cold, took it back to the garage and was told everything was normal, its part of the fuelling to get it through euro rules  :dl_smiley_banghead:

I will not argue with opinion of other members. My personal experience, and this is my 3rd VStrom, is that this bike os not intended to be ridden bellow 3000rpm. All of my three VStroms have been rough bellow 3000 rpm.

They are all choppy below 2500 miles. I am on my second Strom. I have a power commander on my K6 which was professionally set up. We couldn’t get the fuelling  mapped below 2500 so had to revert to the original map up to 2500. After that it is superb. Just one of the joys of owning these bikes.

When I came to V-twin from inline-4 it took me a while to get used to way V-Twin works. But after you get used to it, it feels normal. Just keep remembering to ride over 3000 rpm. After that you'll easily find the spot where you should be downshifting. I can ride mine down to 2200 rpm beacuse I have X-TRE installed. Before that it was impossible bellow 2700 rpm. However, I keep it always above 3000 rpm beacuse I see bike is only happy over that. I don't like engine vibrations below 3000.

A similar complain was discussed on https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/fueling-bliss.429828/, where it is suggested that the ECU can be flashed, to provide a smooth / better fueling at lower rpm. The other thought was to change the front sprocket to a 16 tooth. The sprocket change may help move / increase the rpm slightly to a more usable range. Otherwise a power commander  with the correct mapping, could help solve the rough low rpm complaint.

With TRE I can go as low as 2k rpm without being rough .

As everyone has said this is normal on a 1000 vstrom. Yes you can have the throttle bodies balanced to help but there was nothing in mine  at 30k so yours will be OK I'm sure.
I fitted an x-tre, that helped greatly, much smoother on the over run. Then I fitted a g2 throttle tamer, that helped on pick up. That was enough for me to bond with the bike.
As others have said you can also lower the gearing, particularly if you do a lot of town riding. Use a 16 tooth front or a 43 tooth rear sprocket. I tried the 43, helped in traffic but was revving to much for me on the motorway but you can try it to see if it suits you. Good luck.

Are you sure it has had the recall work done on the ECU. My 15 model was just like this but the new ECU cured it. Just a thought

the BMW 1200gs I had was the same, keep it above 3000rpm. my 650 strom isn't quite so bad.
