High Mileage Vstrom 650 value?
« on: February 24, 2020, 12:09:06 »
Hi all,
wanting peoples opinion. I have a 2014 Vstrom 650 with 69k on the clock, 1st owner from new to 64k (brother in law- steady, commuted around M25 for 4 years) and then me for 5k... its very clean for the miles and has full service (mostly Suzuki) with recent fork seals and head bearing done. Its standard apart from a screen and Oxford heated grips. The only bit of corrosion is as pictured, again with the miles I wouldn't have said that is bad.... I have some shad soft luggage too. What sort of value you would people say it is, I appreciate a dealer will give me nothing for it but its hard to find  similar bikes for sale. Older Vstrom (mid 2000's) with high miles seem to go between £1400 -£2500, but my shape I can only find with around 30-35k on the clock but they seem to be £3600-£4300...?!?!? interested in peoples thoughts....

A guide to value might be that personally if I was a buyer my worry would be that the transmission might be due to fail and then I would be left with something that's probably economically only worth breaking.

Looked after Older versions can topple 100k easy so, as long as it's been serviced regularly and well looked after you should sell it.
As for its true value, I'd say an easy £1500 but it all depends on the season and how much someone wants it.

If I was in your position and wasn't bothered so much about money, at the start of spring I'd eBay it with a £1 starting bid

I would not put that in a £1 start bid, I did that once and that is what it sold for, cost me a bomb,
I would suggest a start bid of £1500 you can always come down if you have to but you can not go up, and as somebody said to me once "you can always give something away"

DOH .. !! , Edit .. not sure where the zeros went but I ment £1000 ...  lol.
However, a low starting bid would attract more interest...  :thumb:

THIS IS NOT A COMMENT ON THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF THE BIKE IN QUESTION.
Assuming potential mileage before collapse is around 100,000 then there is 30% remaining. I would be looking for 30% of the purchase price of the bike. Add to that a valuation of any extras and less off the value of any known defects including tyres, chain and sprockets and brake pads that are in need of renewal.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I would sell your soft luggage as a separate item in a different advert.  It probably won't make any difference to the price you will get for the bike.  It also might be worthwhile having a go at re-painting the corroded bits, one less thing for a potential buyer to use a price reduction lever.  Ebay with a £1k start sound about right.

Personally a looked after bike at that mileage would not bother me however sadly bike buyers sadly seem frightened to death of anything over 20k.

Not much help but I have just sold (january) my 2012 650 strom with 36000 on it for £1500

Hello - I'm in the same boat. 2004 Vstrom 1000 75k miles basically sound mechanically but a bit tatty. Any ideas what it should go for about the same 1000 - 1500 ? its got wilbers suspension front and rear madstad screen and brackets scottoiler. recent battery reg/rec steering head bearings all wheel bearings a few years old decent michelin pilot road 5 trail tyres and 4 pot front brake conversion. Needs clutch casing and front wheel painting. Any thoughts. Only selling due to joining traitors corner with a super tenere.

I would sell the Wilbers rear shock separately if it is in reasonable condition and you have stock shock.

Hi - Was considering back to stock where I can and then sell.

Still wondering if breaking would be better.

Ill give it a clean up then maybe try the water when we see some sunshine.

Judging by the miles some people do (or don't do.....) this would give someone a cheap toy for someone.

Still considering keeping and run as a winter hack - my insurance renewal is July ill see what it would cost then - cheers.

Robsonthejob If you don’t need to sell then why not keep the bike. These bikes are iconic and will become collectors items in the years to come. I have a K6 I have owned from new. I have no intention of selling it or my650 either. I have gradually upgraded them and ride both regularly. I have had the K6 bodywork resprayed and have an Ohlins shock on the back with unrated fork springs courtesy of Darren at MCT. If you are mechanically minded why not see this as project. You could even rebuild the engine.

Just a thought

My thoughts are its worth more than £1,000-1,500 to me... so if its likely to get around that value then I will just keep it. ( I have an eye on a Norden901 for next year so will likely just get a bigger garage! ..doh!) but when I have seen some examples of mine that look a lot worse off pushing mid to higher £2k's … make you start thinking of moving it earlier.... I suppose the answer is to work out what it is worth to me to sell it for and if I get it then great if not I keep it?!?!
