Play in swingarm
« on: June 18, 2019, 19:27:24 »
Hello I noticed sidewards play with my swingarm on my 2017 1000 v strom. If I put the bike on full stand and push on the wheel from the chain side of the bike there is definite movement.
I removed the back wheel and the play feels a lot worse.
Now for the interesting part.......
I took my bike to my local Suzuki dealer who said they haven't heard of the problem before and to put my mind at ease and in the interest of investigation we checked 2 bikes they have in the shop and low and be  hold both have play in the swingarm.
I phoned the shop today but they haven't had chance to look at the bike yet but they have phoned Suzuki and they say they haven't heard of the problem. They also told me that another bike has been brought in today with 2000 miles on the clock and that one is as bad and possibly worse than mine.
Anyone out there had or heard of this problem??????

It’s probably just end float on the swing arm shaft and not worn bearings on a two year old bike.Watch the dealer doesn’t skim a load of money off you by selling you new bearings. They are easily adjustable with the special tool, and it shouldn’t take any more that 30 minutes labour and no parts.

I had a similar problem with my Honda - the locknut on the pivot bolt had come loose and the bolt itself had loosened, resulting in play. The bearings were OK. It's worth checking that it's been tightened correctly.

It is end float and not the bearings but I haven't been able to find any info on how to get rid if it. I have read that it can't be adjusted out by tightening the bolt but the person who wrote that didn't say how old his bike was or how many miles it had covered and it may be different between the the different generations of v strom

Same on my 2015 model, advisory at last mot. Looked at parts cost, nearly fainted. Thought about removing centre stand for next mot.
Special tool required to tighten one end.
I've been asked why I have 3 bikes, well that's because I'm not allowed any more.

You can buy the tool to tighten and remove the locknut on the right-hand side off eBay, 20 quid. Once you have that no more special tools needed to remove the swinging arm.
I always remove the swinging arm, link and steering head and grease all the bearing on a new bike, or at first tyre change as the manufactures use little if any grease at all. My brand new Yamaha Fazer 1000 in 2006 had what smelt like gear oil in all its rear end bearings and no grease whatsoever!

Can’t find any suitable on eBay, when you go into the listings none say they fit the Veek, just the earlier 1000 and various other models, supposed need to have a punt, some as cheap as £14.65.

I phoned again today about something else and got into it a little with the shop after they told me they hadn't had chance to have a proper look but they think its wheel bearings. I informed them that I had taken the wheel out and strangely the swingarm play gets worse with the wheel removed. They then informed me that there should be some play in the swingarm!!!!!
I must admit got a bit annoyed and told them I would pick the bike up and fix it myself at which point they asked me to leave the bike there a bit longer because they've been in touch with Suzuki and they are sending one of their technicians to look at the bike.
I hope this is just me being paranoid but I think there may be more to this...........
So now we wait and see what will happen in the next enthralling episode of the vee with the wibbly wobbly swing arm

Hi Ian, listing does not mention the Veek (2015 model DL1000) same as other ads on eBay

Well bikes back and fixed, oh wait, no it isn't.
They've changed the wheel bearings, greased the suspension linkage, changed the bushes but not the bearings because everything they checked was like new and they didn't want to just replace things for the hell of it, but the knock / play is still there although the feeling that I've got a flat tyre has gone.
Have ordered a socket to adjust swing arm pivot myself but the dealer and their mechanic assures me that the pivot bolt is not adjustable....so lets see if they are right.
On the up side I can't complain about the dealer, they have done the work for free and said they'll put in a warranty claim into Suzuki

I’ve got the same bike, same year v interested to see how you get on with any adjustment (no issues on mine yet but it’s only done a few hundred miles). Hope you manage to resolve  :thumb:

The free play you all have is between the swingarm bush (RHS) and the swingarm bolt. Tolerances are a little loose. The special tool/socket mentioned earlier will not fix the problem. You cannot adjust the swingarm bolt to decrease movement. My `14 had this problem. It needs a new bush to be made up with tighter tolerances. If your mechanic doesn`t agree, get a new mechanic. Worldwide problem.

A lot of this has been covered before. It seems to be a common issue
