What are the extras on the camshafts
« on: September 11, 2019, 12:41:43 »
On Stromtrooper web site, a member (ultrarunner), asked a question that has been unanswered for a while and no-one has attempted to answer. His question and I quote "Just checking the valves and noticed all the extra bits flapping around on the camshafts. Both exhausts have this centrifugal arm disc thing (though in different places) and I'm very curious what it is. (pix posted https://www.stromtrooper.com/v-strom-service-maintenance-questions-discussions/427173-what-extras-camshafts.html) The intake cams have a post in the end (maybe a sort of counter balance? Oil flinger?)

The parts diagrams don't call them out individually, but their clearances are loose enough that I suspect they could be contributing a fair bit to the clatter while running. Does anyone know what they are?" end of quote.

Since I don't know the answer myself, I thought that I would try for an answer over here. Maybe there is someone on this site with the necessary knowledge to help answer his question. Thanks.

If it's a late DL1000 my guess would be some sort of decompression device.

yep.. decompressor - they are on the sv1000 cams also and TL

Checking the bottom of this page..

http://www.venold.com/tl1000s/articles/press_kit3 the tl's.

An automatic decompression system makes it easier to turn over the engine, allowing the starter motor and battery to be smaller and lighter. The centrifugally-controlled system releases compression by holding an exaust valve slightly off its seat at initial cranking speed, and deactivates when the engine fires.

If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Visit Youtube and look for "The Workshop" he does a good video on decompression devices.

Not in front of sensitive ears as he does swear a fair bit......
