Fuel - ethanol
« on: May 21, 2019, 17:53:45 »
Just came back from France\ Spain tour and a couple of times the old v-strom had to put up with 95E15 fuels (yea, I know) because that's all they had. Anyhoo, wanted to pass on an observation- although I didn't notice any "loss of power", the MPG took quite a noticeable dive when I had a tank of the 95E15. Bottom line, only use them when someone puts a gun to your head, or you are in the middle of nowhere
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

Correct me if I'm wrong but SP95 is E5 and most (in fact all as far as I know) supermarket outlets have SP95 E10. In my experience they are spread about 50/50 so you can give E10 pumps a miss and find E5 not far away.

E10 is cheaper than E5. I can't say I've noticed comsumption difference between the two, maybe E15 would be different.

I don't recall seeing E15 pumps, certainly not common. Was that just in Spain?

Over dramatic conclusion there I think.

So how's it going so far then?

I don't know what you're all worrying about. The side valve Briggs and Stratton motor in my ride on mower runs fine on E10  :)... Seriously though, I haven't seen any E15 here in France at all. E10 is becoming more common (popular?) and whenever a fuel station gets a revamp an E10 pump will invariably appear. Some places don't have normal 95 (E5) stuff at all anymore and the only options are E10 or the even more expensive 98. All Vstroms should run fine on E10. Fuel economy may drop a bit though.

While reading up on E15 a lot of warnings pop up about its usage in motorcycles and tools being illegal, no clue why but the papers on E15 say its only cleared for use in "large vehicles" which I believe means anything bigger than a motorcycle...
