Cooling Fan problems for 2002 DL1000
« on: May 07, 2019, 16:18:19 »
Hello, wondered if any of you wizards out there can help.  I have a 2002 DL1000, 53k mileage a great bike which has developed a cooling fan problem.  It does not come on when the bike gets hot.  Did the usual checks and it looks like the fan is kaput.   A new fan is an extortionate price, nearly £500 and a used one from from the USA is around £65-£85 incl postage.  Question is, can my old fan be repaired? Or is there a replacement I can use etc? Or any tips that would assist me.  I am taking the Strom to Spain in July so really need the fan to work!  Thank you in advance👍

If your fan is "kaput" the best thing to do is replace it with a good used one.
What tests did you do ..? Have you shorted out the wires from fan switch to determine the fan has broken.

+1 for kwackboy's suggestion of shorting the contacts in the swtich plug on the radiator. It's a quick test and is a cheaper, easier fix than replacing the fan should that prove to be the cause.

Thank you for the advice.  Put a 12v independent power supply to wiring nothing happens, checked power from loom, OK.  Will check radiator switch for continuity.  If all else fails will purchase from info given by you blokes thank you.👍

If power is OK just loop the 2 wires on the block connector to the fan switch .

It is actually interesting topic. In my 2005 KLV1000 I never heard fan coming on. But temp gauge is OK. 2 bars for normal riding, 3 bars when really hot. Do you think it may be the same case here?

I had similar problems with my 2002 vstrom
I've got a 2nd hand one
Never put it on
It turned out to be my radiator cap was the problem
If you're near Yorkshire you can try it

That is very kind of you but testing it and reading what great advice you blokes have given think fan has had its day plus checking rad was also iffy.  It is 19yrs old so think it’s had a good life.  I have the chance of a rad and fan from a 2008 650 VStrom.  I have been told they are interchangeable.   Could any of you confirm or deny this please?

Thank you Markymark I live in East Yorkshire(Hull) and I will accept your generous offer should this rad and fan I am looking at not be suitable.  Cheers
