DL1000 running costs / faults
« on: May 01, 2019, 19:36:43 »
Hello All
Have test ridden a 2014 DL1000 & got a test ride on a 2018 model lined up
DL1000 is most likely my next bike  :lala:
Thanks to the forum know about the ECU issues on earlier models
Any thing to look out at with the later years most likely 2017 / 2018 models ?
One concern is the exhaust valves on exhaust  , as use bike daily and in winter  concerned that salt & road cr@p might seize up / jam cables ? Is this an issue ?

Also regarding running costs
Do approx 12 k miles a year and was wondering about running costs
Believe service intervals are 7.5 minor service and 15k major service including valve clearances any ball park figures for servicing appreciated
Tyre life normally use Avon Trailriders and get approx 10k miles on my Tiger 800 , any experience of mileage on your DL1000's appreciated
Chain life with scotoiler on Tiger 800 approx 25k any expereince of chain life on your DL1000's appreciated

Cheers Steve

Not to expensive to run for a big bike.
50-60mpg is no trouble. Service intervals  are 7.5 and 15k for the major. They're expensive if you use the main dealer network (220 minor 530 major here). Easy bike to work on so I do my own.  My oe chain lasted 25k, and would have gone more.  Rear tyre 5-6k, front 8-10k. On pilot road 5's at mo but mileage is poor so back to an adventure tyre next time.
I had a tiger 8 before this, liked the lighter weight and sweeter low speed running but the strom has more pull, better suspension and brakes in a different league to the tiger plus I don't have to deal with triumph and their local dealer here!

Used my 2017 DL1000 everyday for commuting even in winter, no major issues with salt on the exhaust valve thingy.
Treated with ACF50 before winter and washed regularly with a squirt of GT85 on links and cables.
Chain, clean and lube regularly. 22000 and still going.
Tyres: Origanals were changed after 9000, Anakee 3's did about the same, but squared off the rear pretty quick. Now running Mitas 07 as I dabble off road.
Serving I do my self because I'm a miser.
Fuel get better results using non super market petrol. Long trips get about 60mpg if I'm steady.
Engine response is mush better than the 2014 version I had, but the body work doesn't feel as solid.
I did have issues with my front forks, but changed to a lighter oil with the right volume and all is good now.

Mine is a 2017/18 with 15K on the clock. My experience >>
Minor service £300.
Major service £500 (would be more like £600 if the shims actually need adjusting).
OE tyres are rubbish cold but last a long time, Michelin R5 last R8K & F10K once run in zero issues, currently running Bridgestone A41.
Chain I've hardly touched, but it has Scottoiler.
Ridden mine through 2x salty winters, zero issue with exhaust valve.
Bolts do vibrate loose, so threadlock everything\ check every 3K.
Brake pads: Front EBC HH 12K, Rear EBC HH still going strong.
Buy your own Iridium spark plugs from M&P Accessories for about £9 each, Suzuki will charge £30 each.
Only fault is the chrome has come off the rear wheel spokes (currently awaiting Suzuki warranty claim)- these spokes don't like salt.
If buying new do order the Suzuki heated grips (they have supposedly fixed them now, but double check).
Oh, don't waste your time ordering extra decals for decoration, they come off very easily. Do add the tank protection.
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.
