Fork springs change - oil amount question.
« on: March 25, 2019, 10:31:17 »
Good morning.

I am about to change springs in my KLV1000 forks for https://www.ohlins.eu/en/products/motorcycle/08688-90--3429/

Now the question is amount of oil per leg.

My service manual says 505ml per leg

Ohlins website for my model says 130mm.

Is it the same amount??

Can you advise?

Half a litre per leg sounds about right. ohlins measurements would equate to a different amount as their internals are not the same .

Aren't  they different things, one being the amount of oil the other being the air gap?
ml = volume
mm = length

Yes they are different things. I am thinking how to recalculate those mm to ml.

Are you saying you have Ohlins springs in Suzuki forks? If so I would go with Ohlins figures for that setup, regardless of whether it is in mm or ml.

I don't have them yet, I am thinking about buying them. Or maybe you can recommend, good inexpensive springs 0.90kg/mm. Not progressive ones?

Yes there two  different things,  go with whatever the spring manufacture you buy recommends.  That would usually be a air gap setting.
My 2014 Veek took a litre for both fork legs ie 500milltre per leg for a 135mm air gap.
Try Hagon or Wilbers. Yes they are progressive but not the same as say hyperpro in that only the top 40mm of the spring is the progressive section where as hyperpro it's more like 80mm.
They feel good on the road and don't  top out like some straight rate springs. Hagon are the cheapest and I've  used them many times with good results, in fact better results than the few times I used Ohlins.

Does anyone know what is air gap on standard springs, and what is the length of them ?

Just changed my fork oil on standard springs and measured out 150mm from the top of each leg which used just over a litre alrogether.

@pichulec, you'll find the answer to your question in the service manual. See https://www.v-strom.co.uk/downloads.htm see section 6-21. Both the volume per leg plus the air gap are shown. Let us know how it turns out.

So springs changed today. When I saw oil which they drained from my forks I couldn't belive it is oil. Was looking more like light grey water. Springs, according to manual should be changed when they reach 443mm, mine had 420mm. No wonder I had no damping in the forks, and every bigger bump I was shooted into the air instead the bump being damped. Now it is like different bike :) How often you blokes change forks oil??

I've done mine twice (although the second time was due to a leaking fork seal 12 months after the first refill). The first time was after 5 years. Both times the oil came out grey - gave the fork internals an extra clean the second time. I may change the oil again next year and try 5w oil instead of 10w that I used last time.
