Over Charging
« on: April 18, 2019, 11:16:38 »
Hello all
I have just had my bike from a service  :fix: :bawl: and as a note the blokes mentioned that it is charging at 17.6v instead of 14v. They did mention that Suzuki do seem to charge a little higher than other manufacturers but that is a little high.
A new rectifier will be in the region of £240  ###
Should I be worried about this over charging and get it replaced?
cheers

Yes,
Max charging voltage should be 14.4v. if you keep riding with this issue your battery will expand and crack then eventually give up.

You can get aftermarket regulators for alot less but make sure it's from Japan and not China.

Have a look at Electrex World for an aftermarket option.

If they don't list anything give them a call... very helpful.

Loads on flea-bay as reasonable prices - taker Your pick.  I spent weeks in the garage repairing the SV wiring and connectors after riding round with a Donkey 'ed reg. Melted two. So if t were mine I'd park it up till its sorted.

M&P OEM there for 70.99

Oh and don't buy Chinese junk - even f sold from a UK address.
If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Sometimes a decent used bargain can be had from a low mileage salvage jobbie, I had a Firestorm many moons ago that put out 15+ volts but spotted it early, it was the resin type Reg/Rec, I bought a finned one from fleabay for £12 from a CBR125 which was plug and play, It worked perfectly for 18 months until I sold it!

I have a little voltmeter near the dash to keep an eye on the voltage. It's 0.2v out but consistent, handy for the paranoid.

Help
Yes the £240 was for a Suzuki genuine part, but I have just spent over £350 on a service (which highlighted the issue) and haven't got much money left to buy a genuine one. I'd go for a salvaged one if I knew where to look, any help with that would be nice :)
the garage say they have phoned Electrix World for me and they don't do one for the DL650 L3  ### :icon_exclaim:
The people at the garage are normally very good and will get a part cheaper if they can, but only if they know where they are getting it from is reliable
