If I fit lights to my v strom can I just turn them off with key or do they have to be on switch ,I was thinking of just putting them in to new fuse box .

That would depend on what type of power output the lamps have. If you use a relay switched fusebox then that would mitigate some of the initial load, using LEDs would be ideal.

You could have them on a switch via the ignition so, when you turn off your ignition the lights turn off even if you have left the switch on.
As Fat Rat says , LED is a good way to go .

I support the call for a relay plus a separate switch for the driving lights. Driving lights can thus be switched on / off on demand, without turning off the ignition. You never know when there maybe a need to switch off the extra lights, either for oncoming traffic or for animals, to conserve battery power, etc. Just remember to wire in a fuse for the driving lights power supply.
