Bugger! Bugger! Bugger!
« on: November 06, 2018, 19:20:53 »
I think I've cross threaded the rear spindle/axle! The nut moves but shrieks and takes a breaker bar to move! Torque wrench says its at 70 but the wheel has lateral play enough to losen the off side chain tensioner in the swinging arm! Really confused as it slid on the thread fine until a couple of thread rotations were visible and then just stuck. So does anyone know a cheap supplier of axle/spindles and nuts?

When you say a couple of thread rotations were visible, are you saying the spindle came through the nut OK until a couple of threads were showing? If so, its very unlikely to be crossed. The nut is designed to grip the spindle threads, are you sure it's not just that?

Yep about two turns visible, ie proud of the nut, then the wrench started cracking!! tried to ease it back of and its jammed tight just flush with the spindle. to the extent that I'm using a 20 inch breaker bar to try to shift it.  :icon_no:

I wonder if a bit of heat on the nut would help?

At this stage it's worth a try! I'll fire up the Coleman dual fuel!

Sounds like the thread has "galled" I.e has started breaking up and has jammed up. It will probably be difficult to remove as you're finding and some heat may help. Worse case scenario is that you may have to cut the nut off with a small angle grinder, then have a good look at the spindle thread. You may well have to get a new or good used spindle and nut. Best of luck.....

something sounds very odd there are you sure you have not missed out a spacer and the spindle is in correctly ? it sounds as if you are bottoming the thread ?

No the spindle hasn't been removed, not botoming as the wheel is loose enough that with a clout on the rear rim the axle is sliding forward on the off side and loosening the tensioner.

you could try a thread restoring file depending on the damage.

But I'd replace if it looks knack'd.
