I should think the cyclist had an egg in his lycra after that!
That pole was too big to knock over without smashing up the street, should have been dismantled and rigg lowered, with traffic control in place....cutting corners in many areas there.

Out of interest... why is it that if I click on the OP's link, I get a "404 - Page not found" on the BBC News website; but if I google "Lewisham video shows falling tree narrowly missing cyclist" (yeah I know, too much time on my hands) I get exactly the same link (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/have/uk-england-london-45834019/lewisham-video-shows-falling-tree-narrowly-missing-cyclist) which works fine?

Oh Christ on a bike - I've sussed it.

In the working link, immediately after "bbc.co.uk/news/" there's a letter "a", then a "v", but this goddam ridiculous forum software has translated those two letters into "have"; and that's how it's also appeared in my cut-and-paste.

I mean, really???  :dl_smiley_banghead:

Slack work again by the Russian assassins.

Yes, that is irritating, however, instead of venting your frustrations at a piece of software, look towards those members that insist on writing like four year olds and creating the need for a translation so us English speakers can understand.

So many other bikes forums are ruined by the use of USA English and comprehensive school "teen babble" that they are almost unreadable and mostly indecipherable. Four pages of posts with huge  repeated quotes only to find out that no one could answer the question that was posed!  We don't want that here do we. I don't want to find "ize" on the end of every other word. With full respect to every contributor to this forum it should nevertheless inform , inspire and entertain. ( in that order)
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Sorry, but software that cannot detect when it's going to mung a posted URL is really not fit for purpose is it?  And worse, not even have a way to override it?   There is literally know way of posting certain URLs on the forum without resorting to writing in code - remember that fiasco over the link to a workshop manual which didn't work because a the URL contained "Suzuki" with a lower-case "s"?

And how often do posters actually write "have" when they mean "have"?

Question - when we see something like "you're", presumably reflecting a change from an incorrect use of "your", has that change been made manually, or automatically by the software?   If it's automatic, then how about flagging every automatic change in red - that would at least have the dual effect of flagging to posters that sorry, your URL has been bollocksed up, but also would highlight posters wot can't write proper in the opinion of the management, and have had their posts auto-edited, and maybe shame them into doing better?

:text-goodpost: Brockett, the strict quote enforcement makes this forum a godsend for people like me who can remember the post I have just read.

Seconds ago.

Other fora that allow the use of such language are available I believe.

Freddyfruitbat, thanks for the feedback (really), all the things you mention are valid, however, the software isn't that clever and I don't have the time or motivation to implement them.

The way I see it we have two choices;

1. Let the translator do its job so we have a site that is clear and easy to read, removing the infuriating text speak and the general illiteratenessnessness and Americansims, this will mean the odd kerfuffle.

2. Let people post what they want, but then people (including me) will not read or post here.

I do look at the translations and every now and then amend/remove if they are causing a problem, 'a v' may be a candidate but as soon as someone starts using it as an English word then back into the translator it will go.

Get yourself you the Moaning old git thread  :smirk:

Run urls through a url shortener to reduce the likelihood of the filter plugin changing it? https://bitly.com/
