noisy clutch
« on: February 28, 2016, 17:15:05 »
hi boys,, first run this year today. did 100 ish miles on the new Michelin PR4`S
great to be back out on the strom again
Good so far. changed the oil yesterday, bike was being warmed up. noise from the clutch area? I pulled the clutch cable in and it almost went away.
sounded like my old CB750 from the 70`s lol.
any ideas? has there been any issues with the clutches on these bikes, mine is on an 11 plate.
thanks in advance

The Clutch Basket on the DL1000 self destructs over time but I didn't think the DL650 suffered in the same way

I had similar back then from a Honda four - going retro is all the rage these days.

More seriously I just responded to your email.

Mine does that too, definitely a clutch noise. Sit in neutral at idle, noise is there. Pull clutch in, noise goes. It sounds normal to me, sort of clutch-y. Not surprising , considering how they work.

With the clutch engaged, the gearbox is moving and the gears are rattling around with no load. All that stops when the clutch lever is pulled. Some noise is normal and it's not from the clutch.

( Suppose I meant clutch related noise, transmission in general.)

release bearing maybe , you get that in a lot of bikes , can't figure out how it can be the gearbox when not in gear that doesn't make sense to me if you had a rattle in the gearbox it's time for some sawdust in the oil or horse it in a skip , my vee does the same thing, from what I've read if it starts shuddering on initial clutch bite its the basket  same type of movement you get from a dual mass flywheel when its on the way out , someone correct me if I'm wrong but is the basket set up like a dualmass accept it has 2 different strength sets of 3 springs springs ?? and why did they do that??

When the bike is in neutral with the clutch lever out, the entire input half of the gearbox is spinning. Only the output half is still. With the clutch lever pulled back, the entire gearbox is still. The throttle bodies are not involved. See if you can check another bike to compare.

My DL1000 is the same, had the clutch basket modified by Sharealike who confirmed the gearboxes can be noisy for the same reasons Greywolf has mentioned, I wouldn't worry about it.

Does the Veek suffer the same clutch basket trouble as the Vee?

Yes it does. Mine was OK till about 20 k miles, just made a bit of a racket but now I get had vibration at about 2500rpm in any gear and if I dip the clutch ever so slightly it goes away.

Thanks for that Porter, food for thought, I am considering buying a Veek, great engine and better braking/suspension over the 650 but not sure I want this hassle.

I've never rode a 650,  but had a tiger800 before this. Yes tbe front brakes are much better than that ( same calipers as the wee) rear about the same. The suspension is good, front a bit harsh and rear a bit soft but if your one up just all is fine.
My shock is on the way out now at 24k but most of that was two up so not to bad. My tthree tiger's never lasted half that mileage!
Its a good old bike for the money, I love the drive fron 3 to 6000 rpm, great ffor overtakes. Its a bit heavier than the 650 though and larger.  I wouldn't let the clutch put me off, you might not have trouble,  I'm two up always and blast it too much!    Get a long test ride
