Engine or Gearbox noise
« on: July 25, 2018, 11:12:03 »
Hello everyone, just got my hands on a 53 plate DL 100, when engine is warm and tick over around 1200rpm there is a rumble from the bottom end, when clutch is disengaged the noise goes away. My thinking is gearbox, when revs are increased noise also goes away. Any ideas gratefully received. Cheers.

Sounds like the infamous clutch "Chudder" do a search on clutch chudder using search feature at the top of the page, there are lots of posts. Also have a look here for a solution.

Just the usual clutch rattle all the 1000 strom do, even the new ones, don't worry. If you're getting bad vibration from say 2500-4000 rpm that's the chudder but they don't all do it, mine just started at 22k.

Many thanks for the reply, when I got the bike the tickover had been put up to 2000rpm and I thought it was concealing something sinister, Cheers, Gary

The clutch judder isn't sinister , its usual for a DL1000 .
As said the later DL's still do it . The judder can be sorted by contacting sharealike on this forum .

I'm assuming it's the same type of rumble/clatter that my GS1000 used to make in the early 80's. Used to irritate the crap out of me but didn't seem to affect anything.

My gear box also makes a little noise from 2nd to 3rd, but it's consider normal.

Is the noise constant in every gear?
This could sound stupid but is also a reason for vibration noise. Do you have a protection engine bar? Is it the same has the Givi that has a union in the middle of it?
With the bike side stand and neutral, accelerate and if the noise comes up, old your protection bar, if the noise stops, than your problem is vibration in the protection bars. You can fix with rubber or something.
