side to side play swingarm
« on: July 20, 2018, 16:52:41 »
Hello All
Need some advice about side to side play in my 2015 1000 v-strom.While removing rear wheel for tyre change noticed some up and down play in the swinging-arm, removed all the linkage then found that the swinging-arm has 3-4mm of side to side play, swinging-arm bolt is tight its as some spacers are missing, I am not too worried about the up and down but side to side play can not be right....any advice?

No side to side play in mine. I do have 2mm up and down, well up just play as is usual on a link system.
I did remove my swinging arm at 6k and grease the bearings but Suzuki had grease on them, something my last three yamaha' never had.
Sorry its not an answer for you, guess you'll need to remove the arm and have a look. Unfortunately to remove it you need the exhaust system removed first. You can just about move the arm enough to inspect the bearings and re grease them but to remove the bearings you'll need the arm out.  See my post about rear wheel play to. Good luck.

Surely there should be no up and down play either? If there is then the suspension is effectively floating uncontrolled?

You will always get a bit of up and down, due to the linkages, side to side is not good, bearing check time as said.

My Glee has had a slight up and down movement from new and Orwell’s are my dealer as well and said this is normal. I’ve no lateral movement at all though.

I'm not convinced this up and down movement is normal especially on a new bike. Sounds like poor manufacturing tolerance to me. As I've said before, any movement up and down is uncontrolled wheel travel and that is not a good thing however small. The linkage has bearings (needle rollers I assume). There should be no play in a brand new bearing.

I never had a bike without the movement,I personally don't consider it a problem,as long as everything is within tolerances.
It is a compounded clearance in several bearings which adds up to a couple of mm or so,no way can it be felt when riding.

 :text-goodpost:
It's compounded by the leverage and magnified by the length of the swinging arm. Once it's all under load, it's fine.

update 2   slaked off the swinging arm spindle lock nuts again undone the spindle and noticed just above the front sprocket a 6mm allen key bolt it seem to lock frame to engine on a sliding shaft do not know what is for but loosed it off anyway stated to tighten up spindle and managed to remove all bar a gnats of side to side. not too sure of the torque for the swinging arm spindle but I know now that it is FT :smirk:
