650 Speedo.
« on: February 14, 2018, 17:37:33 »
Hello.

The speedo on my 2007 650 with 36,000 miles, has recently started acting up. When I turn on the ignition it does a sweep across the dial along with the rev counter. After that it sometimes works OK but every now and then the needle will wildly swing from 0 to full whack. I've checked the connector behind the headstock, one under the rubber boot on the left and the connector on the back of the speedo itself, all were very clean with no signs of corrosion. Are there any more to check in between the wheel sensor and speedo?

I've even had a look at the ECU connector and that's nice and clean too.

From what I've read on various forums it's more likely to be a bad connection rather than the sensor but I wondered if anyone has had similar experiences.

Thanks.

On my 2012 the Speedo runs through connectors above the radiator, and they are prone to corrosion and can affect the speedo. May be the same with yours/worth checking?

That's the first one I checked, clean as a whistle. Thanks anyway.

Make sure to check electrically rather than just visually. Hook up a meter for continuity and wiggle the connectors.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

An update if anyone's interested. I treated the bike to a couple of new spark plugs and while I had the tank and panels off I gave all the speedo wiring connectors a good wiggle. I could only replicate the error whilst the wire from the sensor itself was connected. I bought a used sensor off everyone's favourite online auction, bunged it on at the weekend and the speedo behaved itself impeccably on the way to and from work today.
Thanks for the replies.
