Just bought some engine bars to fit my 2017 strom and !!
« on: December 06, 2017, 15:54:10 »
Bought these Puig engine bars and the fitting instructions are a bit lacking. I figured out the bars mount to the engine mountings that should only be removed one side at a time (or the engine will fall out). Or so they say. The rear mount appears to be a long threaded rod which crosses the rear of the engine, bolt head on lhs, nut on rhs. I'm having difficulty removing the nut even with a breaker bar. I've tried an electronic impact gun still no joy. I'm not a scrawny lad either just worried about the force I'm having to apply. Any one else did this job? Any tips?

The sticking point is the use of thread locker. Heat will fix that.

Just put some on mine, it was very tight, try undoing the nut on right hand side 17mm should go no problem.

Thanks for the replies. Not wanting to heat the alloy frame to be honest, the fixing is countersunk and I can't see how I can avoid heating both. Guess a longer breaker bar on the lhs 17mm nut will be my next step. The thing is obviously nylock and so tight it probs has got thread lock too.

A 6 point socket and a 3ft breaker bar should handle it. If not, put a 6ft pipe over the breaker bar. Just be careful not to twist the entire bike into the ground.

Remember the Archimedes quote, “Give me a place to stand, and a lever long enough, and I will move the world.

I've wheelied a bike before doing that.

I appreciate you may not have access to one of these but this is my weapon of choice . If you know someone with anything similar this will do the job easily.

He said he tried an electric impact gun but they are not all created equal. I have an air compressor and have yet to have anything defeat my air impact gun.

After much deliberation I bought a longer power bar from eBay made by sealey, 750mm long. 17mm Socket fitted I attempted to move the RHS fixing and almost thought it had rounded off, I was using a six sided impact socket so was a bit puzzled as it began clicking. I was shocked/horrified After some diliberation and checking both the nut and socket I found the LHS side was moving as I rotated the LHS nut. Fitted a 14mm socket to the RHS and tried again off it came........very tight this bolt is indeed. New longer bolt fitted, thread is different pitch to the Suzuki nut so I used some thread lock and will revisit the whole set up. I'm no weary bloke as I said earlier and sorry if I've gone but think it will help other so know how tight his thing is.
