How long....
« on: November 12, 2017, 07:03:19 »
How many miles do you expect to get from a sprocket or a set of tyres?

I have all my servicing done by a local garage as I am not mechanically minded and I use the bike as my main vehicle to get to work.   The last time they changed the sprockets and tyres was in March 2017 and I have done 19,000 miles since then and they are saying they need replacing again.....

Does this sound right ?

I would say you've had more than your money's worth out of them if they've gone 19,000 miles.

It's very subjective. Chain life depends on how good you are on maintaining the chain during its life. Failure to lubricate and adjust it and you would be lucky to get half that mileage, especially if you ride in all weathers. Personally I'd be happy with 19k. That's a lot of biking miles in one year!

Seems like a hell of a lot for tyres.

I ride the bike in all weathers and mainly A1M and A41 between Cambridge and London every day.  I do about 28k a year and I try and check the chain every two weeks but I guess I should do it more often.   I admit to being a tad sensible on the bike as I have seen too many fellow bikers taken out but will happily cruise at the limit  and filter when there is the need

Guess whatever I am doing is not far wrong.....

"Sprockets and tyres" is a bit of an odd one to consider in the same breath really... sprockets last much longer than tyres, all other things being equal, and the only reason for them to be changed at the same time would be for convenience eg if (as with the OP) the bike's gone in for service. "Sprockets and chain", however, should be changed together regardless.

I'd be well happy with 19k out of a set of tyres, although I do get 15/20k plus out of a set of chain & sprockets.

How long is a piece of string? Replace those parts when they are worn to the point they need it. It doesn't matter what anybody else does.

Some people report needing two chains for every sprocket change and others report the opposite. While my chains would kink before any noticeable sprocket wear was evident, I'd replace all together. It's better than a broken chain holing your case. I've had chains need replacing anywhere from 11,000 miles to 26,000 miles. I've had rear tyres wear out at 8,000 miles to 20,000 miles and fronts from 15,000 miles until they aged out rather than distanced out. I got more miles out of tyres than most people because I was a long distance tourer. That's easier on brakes and tyres than any other form of riding.
