Oxford heated grips
« on: September 25, 2017, 20:00:58 »
decided to treat myself to some Oxford heated grips. But I am a little confused.  what is the difference. Oxford Heated Premium Hot grips.
"Sport" or "Touring" or "Adventure"    The sportsbike shop are doing them for £46-97 free p&p.  full retail should be £79-99.

I think its the pattern and length that varies, I just bought a touring set, installed the cable to the battery, still got to do the grips, etc., but length is correct for DL650.

The touring ones fit straight onto the 650 without trimming. They are easy to fit, I used one of BigPie's Aux fuseboxes to connect to, but when fitting the throttle side was surprised how little time you get to adjust the fit before the glue sets. Luckily I got it pretty much there the first time.
The only pain is taking the ribbing off of the throttle tube but wasn't too bad with a little Dremel tool.
They work brilliantly and very warm on 100% setting.

Which side did you fit the controller on?would like it on the clutch side but struggling to see how, but it would go on the brake side.
Tried to find a collar online, but closest was a mirror collar

Touring and Sports are the same length, but have a different pattern to the grip surface.
The Adventure ones will not fit any of the V-Stroms.

But fit some Tigers, GS's and KTM's.

Wire them direct to the battery as they will turn themselves off.

Until your controller goes faulty and you only find out when you finish work at 6 o'clock at night, and it's cold, and wet, and dark  :bawl:

I fitted the controller on the left just inboard of the mirror/lever perch by using a stainless hose clamp thing I got off of eBay. I can't find the link now but used that and a small stainless socket head bolt and nut on to some bycycle cloth handlebar tape and it's held fine.
The only thing I was disappointed with was the crap finish on the bracket so I tried to spray it black but has chipped off since.

The Adventure model can work. It will need shortening but there are lines on the end showing where it can be cut. The mirror perch is a handy place to create a mount for things. A small piece of 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" aluminium angle stock can be held in place by putting one side between the mirror and its perch, leaving the other side as a vertical surface. That surface can extend up, down or both directions from the top of the mirror perch.

I take it they work alright through the grip puppies?
I've used grip puppies for several years now, really like them.

Yes. Insulation doesn't prevent heat flow but only slows it down. I took longer for my grips to get hot with covers but they got plenty hot before my hands lost their warmth through the gloves.

I changed to Grab-On grip covers from Grip Puppies though because the puppies disintegrated in too short a time. The Grab-Ons last practically forever and feel as good.

Used a mirror collar for controller, works well apart from looking at hole where the mirror is meant to be.

Mine's fitted to the mirror bracket so I can reach it easily.

Drilled a bigger hole in the bracket and mounted under the mirror bolt

I think the most awkward part of fitting the grips is deciding where to locate the three connectors so the movement/strain on the cables is minimised as the bars are turned. I ended up cable tieing them to the left fork, just under the top yoke, with the power feed running along the right side of the headstock down the frame to the battery.

I had mine fitted by the dealer when I bought the bought the bike and only had 2 issues. 1 unprotected connectors under the fairing, took about a week to get piss wet through and pack up (now sealed inside some old innertube). 2 The cable on the throttle grip hit the tank on full lock and caused the engine to rev which made slow maneuvers interesting.

I would change my dealer!

I used a bicycle inner tube from the pound shop to wrap the connectors, then taped the ends, per another thread.

It is quit large, but doesn't foul the forks, pity it wouldn't reach behind radiator.
