Monokey?
« on: September 17, 2017, 19:40:59 »
I'm looking at a Kappa Garda top box which is Monokey. Is Monokey the same if it's a Givy plate? My bike is a 2017 model do any of the earlier bikes use the same mounting plate. There seems to be a wide variation in prices - not sure which base plate to get.
In short I haven't a clue!

Kappa is a Givi subsidiary. It's basically the lower quality branch. The Monokey mounting system is the same for both.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Just watch out for the difference between monokey and monolock. One is alot more expensive

Monokey and monolock are the different fitment types well known with givi boxes.
If your kappa box has a monokey fitment it will fit a givi monokey plate of any type.

Back again!
Looking at the mounting plates, there seems to be two different ones, one plastic (well it looks plastic) for £60 something and one metal for well over £100. They seem to do the same thing, looking at them, but I don't know if the cheaper one needs extra bits. Can someone enlighten me please?

I use the plastic plate on my Veek with the cheaper monolock box. I think the metal plate is monokey only. Mine has supports under the plate and two supports under the rear. I think the new 650 is the same as the 1000. The plastic one is sound, been on my bike for 3years and my yamaha before that.

Monokey is the heavier duty dsign. Monolock is for scooters and lightweight bikes, according to the Givi blurb, although many use Monolock on bigger bikes without problems. I guess it depends how mich weight you put in them and how bumpy the roads are.

I've used nothing but plastic monokey mounts with no problems. The Glee luggage rack itself is plastic.

I also went for the plastic universal mount as it bolts on easier to the existing rack on the Veek, whereas the slots in the metal plate did not line up very well.

This is the one I used https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/206858?r=GS&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgIPOBRDnARIsAHA1X3QIZBlV5rxwfRxqL5CpzxdH8T42M5EN4XDfAj_niW9n2Vtzj0IT81gaAoRmEALw_wcB

I went mad and splashed out on the metal one (cos it looks nice & I can sneer at those those peasants with their plastic plates ????).
Plus one of the bike insurers was offering a £10 off voucher for Sportsbike Shop with any quote, and theirs was already about the cheapest.
Can't fault it, went on simply, does a good job, and looks the biz when the box is off. Think I ended up paying £85..ish. ????

Or can make your own monokey fitment plate.
Givi sell all the separate parts on their website , except the 8mm aluminium plate which I ordered online . Total cost just under £40 with a few hours labour of my own thrown in. .

I managed to get mine with a givi maxia box, the bloke had broken the key in the barrel of the top box lock, luckily the box was open when he did this.
Paid him £30 for the box with the universal plate, and a new barrel & keys was £9.80 from fleabay.
Was a bit fiddly but only took 15 minutes to fit the new barrel  :fix:
One of my better purchases from fleabay  :lala:

I did the same as Kwackboy, used the existing glee plate(hepco box), drilled some new holes and fitted the lock latch ???? total cost around £9.80

I've ordered the plastic jobby, for £40. I'll see if being cheapskate pays off!

I've never had a top box before - I hate them, but I hate carting my gear around more - I think.

Bought the Kappa Garda box from Italy, apart from looking hoooooooooge it seems to be well made easy to use and as I bought it from Italy, it was a fair bit cheaper and they did free postage... and it only took a week to get here. Excellent!

Just got to fit the plate to the bike now and then see if I can still get my leg over!

Fitted the base plate, a bit of a faf on the bikes rack as the holes didn't line up that well. Box is huge, but I like the way it comes off in a jiffy. I don't like the fact that I can't change the lock for one of the Suzuki's supplied with the bike, which means two keys.
