DL650 K7 X Fuel pump
« on: September 15, 2017, 16:37:34 »
Hi Folks,
Just getting to know my Vstrom and liking it so far but I have a couple of problems which you might help with.
If the subject has been posted before I apologise, being a newby there's a lot to get through !
When I switch on I get the expected pump whir for a couple of seconds but then it seems to continue running, if a bit quieter, with the engine not running.
I though it might be the fan or something but it's definitely the pump ( Lug'ole to tank).
I suspect the next problem is related:-
When out on a run after a few miles I get the dreaded red lamp and the FI symbol. I switch off and start again and all is fine for a few more miles the I get the same again.
I tried the "dealer mode" trick with a jumper wire and got the code C00. So I am baffled.
The lad I bought it off admitted he had hardly used it for over a year, so that might also be a factor
Any ideas please ?
Cheers

Have a read through this thread  http://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=28671.0

You say it hasn't been used for a while, is there a possibility of rust in the tank? It could be a blocked filter, I would do a flow test (see the videos in that thread).

The FI has to be active for the dealer mode trick to work. If you turn the bike off and back on again to check, it will be gone. You need to either ride the bike in dealer mode or carry a spare key. When the FI comes on in the latter case, you can use the spare key to take the seat off and jumper the dealer mode coupler. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html

Thanks for the  advice lads, especially on using dealer mode. I think I will take the pump out now, if it runs continuously with the engine stopped there is something wrong with it. The lousy weather is getting on my wick so I might as well do something useful ???? cheers

Hi All,
It's me again, this time with a question about the fuel pump control. I have been reading up a bit on this pump and it's various attachments ( Pressure regulator , relief valve etc ) and the operational method.
This pump seems to me to be a positive displacement pump and has to have a pressure relief valve on the discharge to protect it from wrecking itself if the discharge is blocked, fair enough. This relief is set about 5 bar ? But this shouldn't happen if the regulator controls the flow to the fuel rail to around 3 bar ?
When you switch on, the pump should run for about 3 secs to prime the system and the stops ( mine doesn't ) So when the correct pressure is reached to the injectors, what stops the pump ? ( engine not running ) Is the electrical supply to the pump interrupted by a pressure switch. If there isn't, then if the regulator is of the spill or dump type, the pump would still run at 3 bar with the regulator spilling back excess to the tank. Or have I got it all wrong ?
Cheers

The regulator does control the pressure by diverting excess back into the tank. This diagram is of an earlier pump but your's works the same way.

Thanks for the excellent detailed drawing Greywolf, but here's my question :-
Engine stopped, switch on ignition, pump runs for 3 secs to prime fuel rail.
Pump stops at 3 bar in fuel rail.
But if the pump can deliver 6 bar the regulator must be diverting fuel back to the tank to maintain 3 bar required at the injectors.
So the pump should keep running at 3 bar indefinitely unless it is "switched off" by a sensor or something else.?

The pump is always running. When the proper pressure is reached, it just gets quieter.

Bingo ! Thanks greywolf, that is what I wanted to hear and explains it all. My own pump does run all the time with a low hum. so I am not worried too much now. When the winter gets close I will have a look at it, along with the STVA C28 fault.
Cheers
