Charger Socket DL1000 2014
« on: August 13, 2017, 11:03:22 »
Hi all,

I 've tried searching previous posts to see if this has been done before but can't seem to see it, I am new to this and have done the usual 'man' look so it is probably there haha.

every time I plug a USB adaptor into the charger socket on the speedometer console it vibrates out after a short distance, I have tried several things to stop this but it eventually works its way loose again, usually when you really need to charge the phone the most.

I was wondering, has anyone changed the old style cigarette charger point for a USB charger fitment? if so where did they get the USB fitment from?

Thanks in advance.

Had the same problem on the way to this years TT, I rammed a cable tie between the charger and hole to make a tighter fit (oh err), this worked for the rest of the trip.

I used some o rings stretched over the body of the adaptor , it's done the job for the last couple of years.

Is it in a 29mm dia. hole? Is there 50mm of clearance behind it?

I think that might be the way forward, the cigarette lighter adaptor is no good for anything else , it blew its fuse when I plugged in a tyre pump which was fine plugged in on other ( non Suzuki) bikes.

Suzuki specifically designed that port as a phone and/or Sat Nav charger. It runs off a 3A fuse.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

I might be able to assist a little here.
Just like you I'd find the connection loosening. Usually I became aware as the sat-nav said it had lost external power.
I just had 4 days away, a few hundred gravel miles included and at last some success.
I put a little piece of compressible fabric under one of the side earth (negative?) pins and wrapped a few layers of electrical tape around the outer end of the USB unit. It's now quite a press fit I think it needed to be jiggled only once in 1600 kms.
Maybe worth a try before spending and modifying.

I have also attached a waterproof 15A to the engine bars to run things like a tyre pump or just as another charging point. It is connected straight to the battery and uses an in-line fuse. This means with the keys out of the bike my phone etc can charge overnight (very little power draw so it can't flatten the battery)

Lots of people on different rider sites have changed the cigaret socket for a usb  socket. Normally 28.6mm for the original cigaret socket and 25mm for the usb  so a brass washer trimmed to fit should do it, some have a large plastic washer so would straight fit. I wired my Sat Nav into that plug on the rear. As the outlet is only rated for 36 watts it is of little use for anything other than phone/satnav. I thought great for heated jacket, not so, that is wired straight on to the battery and doubles as a battery charger connection.
What is this life if full of care we have no time to stand and stare, and rev the nuts off the beast.

Think I must have been living in a fools paradise. I carry a little electric pump in case of punctures and believed I could plug it into the charger socket. Obviously not, although I suppose this is a good time to find out, rather on the side of the road in the rain. Thinking of cutting the fitting for the charger socket off the lead and fitting a couple of crocodile clips to go on the battery if required. Is this a feasible work round ?

That can work. Be careful with polarity or you''l be pumping air out of the tyre.

What about using a higher rated fuse?

Never change a fuse to one of a higher rating unless you know for sure the wiring can handle it, and I'm not sure of that. The fuse is there to protect the wiring, not the device that it runs. Changing the fuse and plugging in a pump could melt the insulation or even start a fire if the wiring isn't heavy enough. Suzuki designed that port to use with a sat/nav and/or phone.

For devices such as tyre pumps you really need to install a separate socket with uprated wiring (At least 15 amp wires, 20 is even better but can be difficult to work with) make sure you buy a good quality socket as cheap ones will get very hot and can melt.
If you want it to switch on/off with the ignition you will also need a relay.
Don't forget to add a fuse, which should be fitted as near to the battery end of the wiring as possible.
I fitted one under my seat, I wired it straight to the battery so I could charge my phone while I wandered off for a coffee etc. Very useful.

Croc clips will be OK but at the very least paint one red and the other one black as you know you will only ever need it when it's dark and raining.

I never had a power socket on earlier bikes and always carried a small foot pump as a back up to the compressed air bottles in the puncture kit. Think it may be time to drag this out of retirement !

Well thank you for all the handy hints and help, sorry it's been so long in replying but I have only just remembered my password haha. I like the idea of another charger point with a higher rated fuse and will follow the guidance re: rated wiring and socket. I also like the idea of changing it to a USB socket so may try that also as I don't like the idea of jamming things in the socket, although I currently have some double sided tape jammed in there at the moment     haha.

thanks again
