Brake pads wear rate
« on: June 17, 2017, 13:43:21 »
My brake pads are due for change, both rear and front. Both were done 5k ago, both sintered EBC according to invoice I got with the bike.
Is that normal wear rate? It seems high to me, considering that organic pads in my car I rag around much more lasted 25k including two track days.

I've changed my brake pads once in 32000 miles and the originals still had plenty of wear on them when I changed them. If you're only getting 5k out of them, you're either very enthusiastic on the brakes, your brakes are binding or they weren't changed in the first place...

Just changed my front at 25k and the rear are still like brand new.
Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

They might have been some of the fake EBC pads available. I managed to buy some rear Galfer pads that looked genuine enough but they only lasted 4.5k.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

I'm not heavy on brakes, most braking does engine.
Must be fake pads, labour cost in that workshop is really reasonable, maybe they make money some other way.  :GRR:
At least I didn't pay for it  :smirk:.

Or they replaced them with a cheap version, I put a rear ebay cheapo specials brake pad on my sons bike, he got two days, yes two days out of them before they was down to the metal.
Lesson learnt "buy cheap, buy twice"
My preference is for Bendix or SBS pads, but have heard reports of these being copied so always buy from a reputable source.

Panic over,  it was MOT place trying to get work out of me,  fronts have half of pads left, rear is 1/3 left on one side almost full on other, caliper rebuilt coming...Bastards failed MOT and said I cannot ride the bike away because there's no brakes. Agreed I can come with pads and tools and change them myself. Guess who got proper bollocking and will never be used for anything again.  What were they thinking? Put the old pads back and got free retest on the spot.
BTW, pads are not EBC and not sintered.

Even though pads can have plenty of depth left, they can become glazed, contaminated and very inefficient, as were mine.
the difference between my half worn std's compared to new EBC HH sintered was night and day.

I always have spare front and rear pads ready and have them in the top box when it is serviced and tell the garage if it needs them use the Ones in the top box
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Brakes are good, passed brake effectiveness test no probs. Garage owner excuse was that bloke doing my MOT on Saturday never did bikes before and in cars brake pads liners are much thicker. How he got motorbike MOT tester certificate is a mystery to me.
