New Vstrom 650 purchase advice sought
« on: June 08, 2017, 14:06:27 »
Hi All

am seriously considering selling my Yamaha MT07 and buying a new 2017 Vstrom 650. looking for something a bit more comfortable on longer rides. Will only ever ride one up and am not a speed merchant. The only thing I'm not sure about is the service intervals which seem to be more frequent than either Yamaha or Kawasaki. Whilst I advocate interim oil and filter changes - taking a bike to the dealer every 3500 miles (to maintain warranty) seems like it's going to get expensive quickly.

Is this what you blokes do and if so roughly how much does it cost you for your servicing....

Any help much appreciated

Thanks Phil

To the best of my knowledge the service int is 7k not 3.5k, Suzuki changed it.

Not on bikes after 2015.
2017 bikes will be 7.5k service after the first 600.

Mechanically they didn't chage a thing... only what was printed in the handbook.

While I had my 2015 Glee in for its 14500 service I had a MT07 as loan bike , found the engine and brakes to be far better than the Glee so if it's performance that drives you , you may be a bit disappointed with the Glee. Make sure you had a long test ride to see it its meets your expectations.

Hi Woody

not really looking for performance as such - rather comfort and ability to do longer rides, sit on the motorway at 75-80. The MT is great for buzzing into town - but get sore on it quickly after 40-50 mins

I don't know how you find your 07 but the one I had the rear suspension was terrible , I felt every bump in the road no matter how I adjusted that rear shock .  You'll think you've gone to heaven on the v strom  :)

My shortlist was down to the 650 V strom or the 700 Tracer. I test rode the Tracer & was concerned about it's comfort for longer journeys.I bought my V strom having only sat on one stationary.
It's physically a much larger bike & I believe I've made the right choice.
As for servicing, it will have it's oil & filter changed at 4k intervals & will go into workshops every 7500. If you buy one you'll love it.

I rode the Tracer 700 and the NC750X before riding the 2017 650 Vstrom.
Great choice of bike. Comfy non slip seat, enough power for my liking, high seat as I'm 6'3", nice riding position.
Added the belly pan, hand guards and Givi V47 top box. Will add heated grips and extra lights later.
Average mpg of about 66 covering the commute, motorway and general relaxed riding.
First service just done £100 or so, next one is 4000 miles away.

My advice, go for it.

Regards
Graeme

fantastic feedback blokes thanks. Not had a definitive answer from Suzuki (they were supposed to email me) re whether the bike needs to go to dealer every 3500k in order to maintain it's warranty. To be honest this could well be a deal breaker for me as I'm running 2 bikes at the moment..

my 2016 650 has service intervals at 7,500 mls [ after the first 600mls ] I've just had to call in to my local Suzuki dealer so asked while I was there , he said the new 2017 model is the same ..7,500ml service intervals ...plus 3 yrs warranty if its serviced at a Suzuki dealer.

From peoples comments it sounds like Suzuki still haven't reprinted the service manuals for the newer bikes, should read 7500 miles as already mentioned. I had to ring Suzuki UK to get them to send me a new page for the service book to stick over the old one.

I was in a well known Suzuki dealership last week where the sales chap showed me the service schedule - which what you seem to imply is an old one. That read 600, 4k, 7.5k, 11k. I can only assume that they are just trying to make a bit more money...

Another dealer I spoke said he just advises his clients to bring them in yearly (assuming they doing reasonable mileage).

So go figure...

Ask the dealership to look in the owners manual to see what the maintenance chart says ?
