engine spec
« on: May 19, 2017, 20:48:33 »
hi
I'm looking to buy a v strom but would like to find out the difference in revs you would be doing at 70 mph on a 650 version and how much lower the revs are on a 1000 cc as I will be doing a lot of motorway miles and on my current Suzuki bandit 650 at 70 mph the revs are just under 6000 and it feels like the bike is working hard, so it would be nice to have the speed and revs to help purchase decision.
thanks in advance...Raymond

You can compare most bikes at http://www.gearingcommander.com/

I'll tell you though, I've spent many days in a row on a 650 at about 6000rpm which make for an indicated 82mph and a real 75mph. Between 2006 and 2011, I rode to all 48 contiguous United States and put 77,000 miles on it. It is now over 126,000 miles with a second owner and never once gave the impression it was working hard. Its smaller pistons made less vibration than a bigger twin's at a lower rpm. The bike would just eat up miles without ever intruding on the joy of the trip.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Hi Ray, think 70mph is just under 4k in 6th and about 4500 in 5th, with good torque from 4k the 1000 is just gently purring along. can`t comment on 650

I concur with Greywolf. I tend to maintain 80mph (actual 75mph) and it just plods along all day at that. 2008 Wee.
