Caliper Bolts
« on: March 09, 2017, 20:16:57 »
Are the bolts that hold our Calipers on anything special in terms of their strength? I want to replace mine with Stainless.

I'd wondered about this. I would probably expect them to be high tensile but don't know. If you can get exact replacements I.e. precise length of thread, length of shoulder etc. I'd say the size is overkill so stainless should be fine. Cue tales of overheating brittle stainless screws.....

See the chart at https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/materials-and-grades/bolt-grade-chart.aspx

The stock bolts are metric 8.8 or SAE grade 5. They are much stronger than stainless alloys. I wouldn't recommend the change. If you do, check them at least yearly.

I did get myself some replacement stainless steel caliper bolts from wemoto. I can only assume they are up to the job otherwise they would not sell them. They were too long though so I shored them up wit three washers each

Hi blokes, sorry to hijack the post but it seems related so here goes. My front right caliper fell off yesterday. Seems both bolts had worked themselves loose. My own fault for not checking regularly enough I know. The issue I'm having is finding the right sized bolts to replace them with. I bought a set of 4 titanium ones off of ebay but when I put them on they were pressing up against the disc. Do you know if the ABS version has shorter ones? If so, ány idea where I can get some? Cheers.

I had exactly the same happen to me.  Ordered the bolts from a local dealer and they never turned up.

Ordered from here and delivered within a few days:

Search for your particular bike and follow the links.
