As far as I can tell, the only functional difference is how to drill the hole to bypass the stock filter. More than a few people have reported success.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

If it's just a case of getting a hole between the inlet and outlet, then I'm going to go mental with my new makita. I don't have much to lose, it's broken anyway. If it does work, it saves me spending £100 on a new housing, and will cost about £25 instead.

I'll report back once I've broken something.

If it's a success, I'll buy a Mahle filter that Triumph use, £16 on ebay.

Well I did a flow test today. Should be 1200ml in 30 seconds.

I got 350ml in 30 seconds.

Ordered a new strainer and an external filter. When it arrives I'll start the mod.

That 168ml in 10 seconds is wrong. Engines start having problems with about 600ml in 30 seconds.

The whole manual is bad with the amount of fuel. The following is crazy. Unless you believe 1.3/1.1 US/Imp oz is the equivalent of 1200ml or turning on the pump for 30 seconds supplies 60 seconds worth of power.

Apply 12 volts to the fuel pump for 30 seconds and measure
the amount of fuel discharged.
Battery ® terminal -- Power source lead wire CD
(Yellow with red tracer)
If the pump does not discharge the amount specified, it means
that the fuel pump is defective or that the fuel filter is clogged.
_ Fuel discharge amount: Approx. 1 200 ml/60 sec.
(1.3/1.1 US/Imp oz)/60 sec.

On mine I carried out the quick fuel flow test cycling the ignition three times and got 350ml which seems to be the agreed correct amount.
I counted as the pump ran each time and got a total of 12secs that would be 1750ml/60sec so 1200ml/60sec sounds a good real world minimum figure to agree on.
As greywolf has said that's when bikes start to give trouble.

Purely out of interest, can the plastic housing that contains the high pressure filter & regulator be split to access the filter? Is it possible to just remove the filter from the housing?
Maybe a neater job than attacking it with a drill if it's possible?

Not to my knowledge.

I'll look at alternatives once it's apart. I have access to a lathe and milling machine etc.

I don't see any way to access the filter section. The housing must be cast around it.

Thought as much.

Triumph 1050 pump and filter housing, while it looks rudimentary, there's a nice simple logic to it!

Completed. Ridden 5 miles. Gained what feels like 50bhp.

New fuel flow test was 1250ml in 30s.

I fitted a new pump while I was in there. Pics to follow.

Tank is clean but had rusty silt in the last litre of fuel. Syringed it out and washed out the tank.

What's the exact part that you used for the inline fuel filter? And did you modify the original fuel hose or a new one? I still have a pump unit lying here and might try this too as a little project

I used a mahle kl145, and some fuel injection pipe and hydraulic crimp clips. I mounted the filter in foam on the lhs, above a coil, on the outside of the frame. I might move it at a later date.
