Out of interest was it the coils at the top of the stator that were burnt out?

To Crazy horse
I am still having problems, tested the R/R but not convinced it's at fault, only using the Haynes manual as a guide.

I have tested the alternator (static) all seems fine.

At £215 it's a lot to pay if the R/R is not at fault,

I will keep trying, I bought a Suzuki as they were supposed to be bullet proof, at 6years old & 36000 miles I am beginning to loose faith

Hi

Markrop...My fault on the coils was that one coils was showing a very low voltage.

If you have a voltmeter, and whilst you have the alternator disconnected from the Reg/Rec, start the engine, and with the voltmeter, measure the voltage (on the Volts AC scale) between the three leads from the alternator.
(A to B, A to C and B to C). All readings should be 60vac or above.
This is all with the engine revs at 5k.

If you have already tested the alternator in this fashion, I apologise for wasting your time.

Kwackboy...yes it was at the top of the coils, but at the rear of the unit.

Cheers

Hi

Got a Shindengen SH847 series reg/rec, from Jack at Roadstercycle in California.

What with the import tax, and Royal Mail asking for a slice, it was not the cheap option, but I intend to keep the bike for another two years, so thought I'd give the new coils the best of chances to survive longer than the original.

It is physically a larger item, and I am modifiying the bracket the original reg/rec sat upon, but it will fit.
Will do a couple of photos when nearer completion.

Cheers

Jack is a good bloke. I'd wire the DC side of the R/R to the battery with an automotive circuit breaker near the positive post.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
