Heated grips .... Again
« on: August 22, 2016, 22:16:02 »
Evening all.

My Oxford hot grips packed up in the spring, and with Autumn approaching it's time to sort them out. Traced the fault to the controller (no surprises there, but shame it is completely unopenable, making repair impossible) and have just bought a replacement on Fleabay. So far so good.

A couple of questions:
1. Does the heated grips connector (behind and above the rad) have a fuse between it and the battery, or is it best to fit one between the connector and grips controller? I assumed it would be fused, but now I'm wondering .....
2. Do people wrap the connections in insulating tape? Again, I did this last time, but wonder if it's best to keep them unwrapped so they can air dry, rather than risk water getting trapped inside the insulating tape.

Thanks for your wisdom
2.

I'm not sure about them being fused, but I covered mine with bicycle inner tubes after spraying them with AFC 50.

I have had 3 sets on different bikes but they have all had a fuse near the battery. I suppose it depends where they have taken the power feed from, but I guess it will be near that.

For water tight connections use Self Amalgamating tape  :thumb:

Just fitted Oxford grips to my Glee and yes there is a fuse in the live feed to the controller, right up close to the battery. I haven't sealed any of my connecting plugs, but that's not too say I won't need to!!
Cheers

All done. But what a bugger securing the cables and connecters in a way they don't foul the steering or rub against sharp bits!

Connecters are all wrapped in self-amalgamating tape. So hope I won't have to change the flipping controller again!
