Author Topic: Flat battery again from heated grips! (Read 4034 times)

So Friday I rode from Manchester to donington park for a company track day, I came out at half 5 when we were done to find my battery completely flat..... I had knocked the heated grips onto the first click (dial type control) or someone had messed with it

Luckily blagged a jumpstart from one of the pit crew and headed home!

The question is.... where is the best place to pick up a switched live so it can't happen again?

it's happened twice already and I don't fancy getting stuck somewhere stupid

You could get one of my fuseboxes for 27 quid for a plug and play solution. If you want to diy it, make sure you use a relay, you can pick up a switched live just under the tank, closest to the battery, there's a 2 way connector you can get a feed to trigger the relay. I can't remember the wire colours.

The connector provides the power to the brake light switch.

The horn is a good switched live on a glee, can't speak for the others.

Hi, as your heated grips are wired directly to your battery you are not far from an ignition live . Use the live that goes to your rear brake light switch .
Find the switch and follow the wires, you may find the connector under where you're tank mounts infront of your battery .
Just remove the live wire from the battery (leave the earth connected )and connect it to the live wire of the rear brake switch, no need for a relay .

I believe the glee has a connector specifically for heated grips that can also be used, but I've no idea where you can find it.

I wired mine to the rear brake switch, so it became ignition switched.

It's an '02 1000 or a Vee as it's referred to I think.

Been using mine for all sorts of accessories. So simple even I can do it. Saved me from hacking into the factory wiring.

Whichever route you go ALWAYS disconnect the battery earth lead first & reconnect it last.

If you're not up to speed on electrics, a bigpie fusebox would be the best way forward ;)

Take a supply from the battery through a fuse to a relay, and then onto the grips. The control for the relay supply take from the rear light supply in the tool tray.

I also use Bigpies fuse box and run my heated grips, usb sockets and soon to be Aux lights from it.

Only issue I had was the wire that connects to the plug was a little short on mine so couldn't fit it under the seat and had to tywrap it to the frame, which actually works out better for me

Make sure you run through a relay so that there is no power coming from battery until the ignition is on

I took a switched live from under the rear of the seat, the wire that goes to the number plate lights (grey)
Used crimp male/female connectors

Works a treat

I've wired mine through a Denali PowerHub2 along with Sat Nav and have both connected to switched 5-amp fuses. Took the relay switch off the brown tail light cable (2014 V-strom 1000) and cut out the in-line fuses. Used Posi-Tite waterproof connectors to arse-end additional cabling (8-amp). Fiddly putting it all together but works a treat. Also used cable sheathing from Maplin to protect all cables where they run under/over potential sources of rubbing. With the PowerHub 2 I still have a another four free connectors for further customising!

I used the live for the sidelights to power relay for day running lights.
