I've done the fuel pump mod now won't start!
« on: June 25, 2016, 16:15:06 »
Hi folks as some of you may know I've been having problems with the Vstrom dying when the revs get to 6k and thanks to help from some on here it was down to a clogged HP filter. I've done the by-pass mod and now the fuel is gushing out. Problem is now the bike won't start!! It starts for a second or two idling rough then just dies. Has anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?
Thanks folks.

Same questions from me, have you done a flow/pressure test?

When I did mine there was a rubber O ring missing in the assembly (see that earlier thread), that stopped my bike starting.

Does the fuel pump make noise when the ignition is turned on then get quiet after a few seconds? It should act that way.

Yes grey wolf the pump makes a priming noise then goes quiet. The flow is very strong and the cycle test is fine. What O ring is that Fat Rat? All the pump assembly is there and in tact. When u say pressure test what results am I looking for?

I wonder if it can be something as simple as flooded intakes. Have you tried opening the throttle while cranking?

I've never opened the throttle while cranking it over. It's hard to diagnose why as the fuel is being pushed through and the flow is as it should be. I was thinking if it was the external filter I got?

Try opening the throttle until it keeps firing. It can take a while to clear out the excess fuel vapor.

Yes the filter is the correct way round. What filter would you suggest is best for using as an external filter?

If I do the thumb test what results should I get? Is it just a case of the fuel pump pushing my thumb off or should it return to the tank?

It should push fuel past your thumb. Have you tried opening the throttle while cranking yet? If not, try that first.

As already been said you need to do a pressure test . Although you have good flow the bike won't run without pressure.
There is two o-rings, 1 between the pump and filter and the other at the top between the filter and the pressure regulator.
Do both pressure and flow tests and see what you find , 1200ml flow and the pressure test should easily push past your thumb .
