Ignition switch / steering lock fault
« on: May 15, 2016, 17:37:01 »
2015 1000 with only 1100miles . Went into garage this morning to take for a spin . Steering lock jammed on , both keys will not turn to ignition setting or back to steering lock with light on . WD40 , duck oil , spray Ptfe used  . Nothing appears loose or jammed . There must be a simple solution . Used yesterday and all was OK .

I assume you have recovered from last night by now (still under the influence in the morning) so try it again and you'll find the keys work fine  lol

Try moving the handlebar when you have inserted the key and are trying to unlock it. Steerings do lock and I find moving the handlebar helps

Sometimes the stearing lock can jam if the stearing is straightened out before the stearing locking pin has had time to release. Keeping the stearing at full lock while turning the key could be a solution.

When I first saw this, I thought it would be another case of one of the two bolts that connect the fairing frame to the main frame falling out and preventing the steering from moving to one side. That's all too common a problem but not the case here as it does not involve being able to turn the key in the ignition.

It is unfortunate that you had this problem, good service from the dealer makes things more pleasant. :)

Always got good service from my dealer, but I can tell he's fed with the DL1000 everyone he sold has had problems,
he hasn't got one on demo or in show room,  but has  Tracer on demo  and 4 in show room say no more ...

In Mickey oats workshop today . never appreciated the amount of work to change a ignition barrel . Tank off , front wheel off , fork legs  dropped , Tripple clamps off . Drill out ignition barrel assembly . Then build back up . While the tank was off checked all the connections were greased up and sealed . Brian the mechanic ( scottish champ 600cc road racer / who likes the handling of the 1000  ) greased the steering head bearings for me foc ( only a very small amount of white grease from the factory  / I got him to really coat it up )  and checked the condition of the air filter all OK at 1100 miles .
while the tank was off he explained the recall mods the storm has been in for .
Tie wrapping simple cable assembly's( where rubbing on tank ) to give clearance and greasing us front electrical junctions Under tank . These are so simple faults that have gave this poor bike a bad name .
Will keep you blokes posted on highs and lows of storm ownership .
At this point only highs ( journey to bike dealership for coffee and chat is a distraction from stress at work )
