Rear sprocket size
« on: May 17, 2016, 18:58:27 »
The workshop manual does not have the number of teeth but I counted them on a couple of the photographs and it shows as 41 teeth. Online I found it also as 41 teeth.
OEM Gear Ratio - 17T Front Sprocket / 41T Rear Sprocket      OEM Chain - 525 Pitch / 116 Links

but on a chain and sprocket supplier site it is shown as 42 teeth with the US as 41 and the length of the chain is also shown slightly different with 525 / 112 links.

I was thinking of increasing a tooth on the rear sprocket and drop a tooth on the front just to give it a little more oomph as I am not bothered about the top speed since I never go over 100 70 mph anyway  :liar:  and the slight increase in revs is negligible but it will give even a smoother low gear town riding.

SO, the question is: Is the rear in UK and Europe 41 or 42 teeth?

Just change the front sprocket to a 16 tooth. Get similar results. Plus if you've got a Veek why don't you just count the teeth on your rear sprocket?

The number of teeth is noted in the parts fiche. It's 17 in the front and 41 on the rear, just like the old Vee.

41 in US, 42 in Europe.

We're better riders

Are you sure about that? A Euro parts site lists the same part number for the rear sprocket as the old DL1000 world wide which is a 41 tooth sprocket. 6451135F20

OEM sprockets preferably have an odd number of teeth as an even number accelerates uneven wear with the same tooth to chain relationship often repeating.

It should be easy to tell for sure as there are plenty of Euro Veeks on this site. The number of teeth should be stamped on the sprocket.

Online catalogue

Veek Europe etc

Veek US

Europe K2-L0

US k2-L0

The various models such as Desert, Adventure, Sports etc do not have any bearings on the chain and sprocket size. Infact from K2 onwards including the Veek, they are the same chain and sprocket size.

by the way, I did a search for these chain and sprockets and got very good reviews. They seem to last longer than DID even in harsh Norwegian conditions  :thumb:

Those links are all for JT sprockets, an aftermarket manufacturer with a good reputation. They make many sizes. I'm looking for corroboration that any OEM Veek rear sprocket has 42 teeth, as stated in post #3.

If that was just a joke, I'll admit I have no sense of humor around tech questions as I've seen too many people get in trouble from erroneous information.

this is the first thing I will do after break-in the bike. Next time I will be in shop I will check the sprocket size and tell you.

The rear sprocket on my bike is 41 but I have seen many suppliers selling 42T. JT seems to say 42 for non US bikes and some UK sellers are selling 42.

The rear sprocket seems OK anyway and the rule of thumb that says 2 chain changes to one sprocket change has yet to come into effect with me so I'll be sticking with this one for the time being.

Just need to clean the chain properly and tighten it and it should be good for a while yet.

Based on reports from Vee riders all over the world, I would say the most popular rear sprocket choice for those wanting a change is 43 teeth. OEM is 41 teeth no matter what country any DL1000 is sold in.
