Gunk for cleaning?
« on: May 11, 2016, 11:20:19 »
My bike is a filthy beast with years of grime, oil and crud baked on. Cleaning it doesn't help. I have some original Gunk and Gunk spray Degreaser (links below), is it safe to spray all over the bike (engine, radiator, frame, wheels) or is it likely to eat the paint, damage the radiator etc. If it's crap, what's a recommended cleaner/degreaser? (Snow foam lance, muc-off, car shampoo and a cloth doesn't touch it).

Thanks

I've used Gunk with a toothbrush... And it melted the toothbrush.

So I don't think it's safe on plastics, so I would only use it on metal parts that are off the bike.

Wouldn't want it eating seals and hoses.

I use Rhino Goo and a pressure washer...

Have to sort of agree, GUNK is a degeaser, not really meant for paintwork and will remove grease from bearings if allowed to get in. I have used it on the bike, but wash off quickly.
You would be far better off to either buy some GREEN GUNK, which is not quite so harsh, or a branded bike cleaner.
I pressure washer will help, but again be careful not to wash grease out of bearings.
Of course, there is always the option to pay a bike cleaner to do the job for you !!!!!

Pay someone to wash it?? Eeek! You're not from round here... (Glad I'm sat down!!) :haha:

Thanks for the comments. That's kind of what I thought.  I did look at Green Gunk but that said to avoid aluminium (or painted surfaces or something )

I'll check out Rhino Goo or SDoc 100 or similar. I do have a pressure washer (and snow foam) but it doesn't seem to sort it and I can't spray it close at the radiator which is particularly minging.

I did read WD40 is good for shifting grime...

Paraffin is a brilliant degreaser. Can usually buy 5 litres for £8ish at B&Q or Homebase

Paraffin or red can gunk are both very good, no need to leave them on for long. I'd beware the green can gunk, I tried it on another bike and it doesn't clean well but did turn some paint white and stain a plastic airbox too.

SDoc 100 is excellent, but expensive. Spray it on, make cup of tea, drink tea, spray it off. Congratulate self. Dry bike, spray on ACF50.

I just used swarfega, the Green jell in a red pot, with a toilet and bottle brush, rinsed off with hot water, it has done a fantastic job, and the bike cells nice too. :)

Thanks again everyone. I'll try those suggestions. I've got some vouchers for £10-off at getgeared so may buy some sdoc100 then tackle it with a combination of all (if that doesn't work). B&Q near me don't seem to have paraffin at the moment so that may come next...

(I've got orange swarfega with corn bits[?] in it - Aldi were selling it off cheap so that may go on as well)

I'll post some pics as I go on.

Well, I finally got round to giving it a bit of a clean. Started with WD40 and a toothbrush, then used Procycle degreaser - chap in Get Getgeared says it's the same stuff as SDoc100 and is made in the same factory but a few quid cheaper). Not bad results given I've never really cleaned it in 3.5years (beyond quick wash) and it gets used as a daily commuter all year round. I do ACF50 it lots and smear ACF50 corrosion block over it in winter...
