A 2011 and before (Wee) is a modified (detuned) SV650 Engine.

The 2012 onwards (Glee) is a Gladius Engine.

The SV and Gladius engines are a little different. The Wee engine is based on the SV and the Glee engine is based on the Gladius. Neither are identical. See my sig if you don't get the terminology. The change on the V-Strom 650 was between the L1 or 2011 model year and the L2 or 2012 model year.

I was too lazy to look for specific years. Narrowing the search L1s finds this.

thank you sir,
cheers

The 650s are better behaved that the Vees with the fueling better metered rather than on the edge of too lean for emissions control. 650s also don't get the clutch chudder that develops on older 1000s. All models will benefit from adding headlight relays for a little more light and a lot more long term reliability.

that's good news for the clutch and fuel.
do you know of a headlight relay kit for the wee and where to get it from?

thank you

Bigpie here makes kits as needed. If you know how to work with wiring, all you need is a pair of automotive relays, one male plus two female headlight plugs and the knowledge that the dipped (standard) beam wire is black with a blue stripe, the main (high) beam is yellow and black with a white stripe is earth. Then follow this diagram except for the earths going to the frame. The relay earths from the 85 terminals go to each other then on to the battery negative. The headlight plug earths connect together and go on to a black/white wire, often connecting to the male plug on the upper right. Those who are happy with direct wiring rather than plug and play don't even need to buy plugs.

grey wolf, nice diag mate, thank you.
the plug on the top right? what is it, in my mind I have just the plugs on the back of the bulbs, like on a car and bottom of the diag.
when you say direct wire, do you mean replacing the conector in the plug with the new wire and conector?
sorry....

The male plug on the upper right would have to be purchased separately along with 2 female plugs to do a plug and play installation. It would plug into one of the stock female headlight plugs and the other would be taped over. At the additional cost of one male and two female plugs, you would basically be duplicating commercial kits and not modifying any stock wiring.

Direct wire would mean the stock female headlight plugs are cut off and spliced into the relays outputs.  The relays inputs would be spliced into the stock bike loom. That saves the cost of new plugs and bypasses some plug in connectors and any corrosion problems using them can add to the connectors already present.

can I be cheeky, and ask, do you have a diag or idiots guide for this way.

thanks

IMHO, anybody who needs a higher level of information than already given should not be trying it.

very good point, and a true one, I'm OK with doing most things like wiring, but I'm over anal, I like to read up as much as I can first, that way I know it will be right first try.
it does make me look a nob though, sorry sir.

steve

ps. god, it takes me an age and searching  to pick a  screw driver, its sad but true....
