Exhaust removal
« on: March 25, 2016, 14:08:15 »
I'm toying with the idea of removing my exhaust to clean it up a bit. It's got some light surface corrosion and though it can't be seen, its something I'd like to try get scrubbed/blasted off and polished up.

Any tips or tricks for removing the standard exhaust on the K5 Vee? I'm imagining the headers are going to be tough to get off, the front ones seem wide open to the elements.

If they're like the Navigator the front pipes or "headers" are secured by Allen bolts made from special crumbly cheese. I managed to remove all mine bar one front one which required me to get medieval on its arse. After bludgeoning metric, imperial Allen sockets and torx bits I cut the head off with a cutting disc. I then removed the front pipe and welded a nut to the remnants to remove it.

Avoid, clean 'em up on the 'bike and then sob when they're exactly the same after the first wet ride...
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Haha yeah I've been there with my old bike  (Fazer) and stubborn exhaust studs, partially why I wanted to take a look see to find out what they're like!

I'm up in the shmoke and need it for commuting so I'm not going to go messing with anything that'll cause me too much grief. I may just leave it alone. It gets used year round for me doesn't get much down time other than when I'm off work

Scotch brite pads with Tcut will remove most of the surface corrosion, followed by autosol and elbow grease.

Waiting on a broken finger to heal before I get tinkering on the bike again.

I've only been off it for 3 weeks and already find myself browsing done deal and adverts etc. I need to get back on my strom to put a grin on my face, I've forgotten it already!!

Seen a few planes fly by this afternoon from it
