Extending the Extenda
« on: January 22, 2016, 20:25:43 »
Most of probably have a front mudguard extenda, but adding a mudflap onto that stops all the crap from the front wheel splattering the engine, it also stops a lot of the spray when riding in the rain, keeping your feet drier.
Only cost about a fiver on Ebay..comes with a bracket if needed.....I just stuck it on with superglue. Easily cut down to any size with scissors.

Good call.
Although to modern eyes an effective front mudguard -  too fugly.
A similar all covering hugger to keep crap off the bikes rear end ( and mine)  -  too fugly.
A fully enclosed final drive chain case - too fugly.

Maybe that would look a bit like a 650cc / 1000 cc Honda 90.

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Something like that will also cut down on the occurrence of rear tyre punctures. Rear tyres are the usual victims because nails and screws normally lie on their sides so don't puncture front tyres. The front tyre dislodges sharp objects to lift them into the air or even toss them into the rear tyre so the points meet the rubber. Very low front mudguards prevent much of that.

I initially fitted it to try to stop the chipping damage from stones to the engine casings, which in turn causes them to look ropey as soon as the salt and crud get to the exposed aluminum.
But another benefit was the big reduction in spray from the front tyre soaking my boots.
You will see an instant improvement on the amount of dirt on your bash plate.
It might not look pretty but it does the job !

Can you take a picture of it fitted to your bike?
Crazy, but that's how it goes

And forget how to hate

Looks like a worthy addition  :). I fitted the standard 'Extenda' to my 'Strom, but was amazed at just how much spray and crap manages to work it's way right up to near the bottom of the radiator still .

Might have to have one of these myself, cheers!

To the Original Poster. Please note that superglue is not waterproof. It will hold for some time (months?), but eventually will come off. Maybe if you can seal the joints with some kind of paint/silicone it will stay fixed.

Flyingpanman...I did not know that, thank you for your technical advice, that's probably why the  one on my last V-Strom dropped off. I'll be fitting it this week and will probably add a couple of small bolts and copious amounts of black silicon to make a good seal.
The flap actually comes with a bracket and bolts but I thought gluing it would look neater

Use a PU adhesive e.g. Tigerseal and it will never move

The Suzuki one get my vote.....is it genuine? If so can you post a link or part number please?

On this subject, 'Pyramid plastics' do an 'no screws' adhesive for gluing extendas to mud-guards £4.98. OR will supply a mudguard extenda with double sided tessa adhesive pieces- instead of drilling.£19.50

Mine was originally stuck on with the double sided tape,  stayed on for about 6 months then half fell off on the M1. I put it back on using the screws and some gutter adhesive and it hasn't moved in over 3 years  :thumb:

The Pyramid mudguard Extenda comes with 2 pieces of double sided foam tape. It is used only to locate the device position to drill for screws. The tape alone is not strong enough. I did use double sided foam tape to attach them on my last two bikes but I replaced the provided tape with many pieces of tape covering the full area. I used 3M™ VHB™ Tape 4950 http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Adhesives/Tapes/Products/~/3M-VHB-Tape-4950?N=6105+3293242423&rt=rud

I also sealed the edges with black silicone seal. Otherwise, dirty water gets into the space between the two parts and leaks down, staining the Extenda. I couldn't get them apart when I tried. You can see the slightly different color of the silicone seal.
