Wiring loom failure ! Advice !
« on: March 02, 2016, 17:03:01 »
I had a problem with my V-Strom 650, the Wiring loom at mileage 12k , age 2 years and 9months Doh ! It vexed me !
Anyway failure manifested itself as being unable to switch off left indicator ( not flashing, just on!) Plus eventually a funny smell, Burning! noooo !
The wiring loom runs over the cross beam between the mid frame rails . Look under frame/seat as if looking into top of rear shock . If your wiring actually touches the frame rail place a section of self adhesive sponge backed tape between the two and Hello presto no loom failure in the future ! I had the experience of being transported back from Glencoe on 5 different AA transporters (one broke down by the way) taking 14 hours back to West Wales ! Hope my help avoid such problem for anyone else who loves their Vstrom 650

Although out of warranty you may have a claim for not fit for purpose. Also this fault has been highlighted before.
Inform your dealer.

Blimey. Now this thread is a co-incidence

Good to know about this, I have had a couple of electrical wiring issues recently , low beam failure, which got me to send the bike into a auto electrician, they said corroded connector under tank / front of air box, 5 hours later and £300 bill got bike back only for it to fail again on Tuesday, just had a call from said auto electrician and lo and behold he is saying pretty much the same thing as this thread.... short between indicator (right hand in my case) causing constant on, fuse burn out and loom failure / short

Don't know how much this is going to cost me now, but it needs sorting out, they are taking photographs of the offending short.

I might be following this up with Suzuki also.

2011 registered AL2 for those interested.

Well have the Strom back again from the auto electricians. The issue this time was the wiring loom shorting against the frame, beneath fuel tank, I was told, there were 17 wires that were failing and have had to be redressed. This was the point of failure for the dipped beams and the indicators. Looked like the frame has received some heat damage too, and obviously the harness sheathing is completely trashed.

Waiting for the sparks to send me the photos of the burn damage, ill try and figure out how to post and get them up here, also maybe a little letter to Mr Suzuki is in order

Do, as it looks like this is a potential design flaw and a recall may be in order...

It's the same thing that is going on with the Veek recall. It just isn't as prevalent on the other models.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

They'll reply - I bet they'll just tell you it's not a known issue and your bike is out of warranty...

Strange that the originator of this thread Carl Bridges has not been back, I wonder if he has sorted it.

Looks like Suzuki can build great engines and design great bikes but decide to save 50 quid by not protecting the wiring and routing it correctly.
