Refuelling
« on: January 07, 2016, 14:12:26 »
This might be in the realms of a stupid question. How do people refuel their bikes? My bike has no centre stand so I have been sitting astride it whilst refuelling but I am not sure of the wisdom of it. What are other people's opinions?

No center stand here either. Always off the 'bike for two reasons.

1. I have stumps for legs and only one foot will reach the ground.

2. If you overfill, your spuds will sting like a bast*rd and people shall laugh.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

I used to sit on mine while refueling, but decided it was a bad idea (On the off-chance it all goes bang).

You won't get the maximum fuel in if it is on a side stand.

I always do mine on the centre stand now.

I guess it depends if it's a petrol station that requires you to take your helmet off or not. If so, it's better to get off the bike, if it's an auto-pump then no problem.

I bet one cannot put much more in when upright obviously will take more but would be interesting to know how much more.
Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

I sat astride my Glee & filled it to the bottom of the metal cage bit if I was heading somewhere, just for that extra few miles: sidestand if I was just pottering aroundso it wouldn't be right up to the cap if I parked up somewhere soon after.

Katie is sidestand only as KTM are quite specific about the order of filling tanks & how far up each you go or you get wet feet. Mileage is feckin' awful & I have to stop about every other station so trying to neck it is not as big a gain anyway.... :GRR:

+1!

I'm sure folk on another thread I started about the difference in range when brimming it said it wasn't advisable to do so.

considering the tank range on the wee I usually fill up on side stand off the bike, I have had blow back and overfilled my R1 on occasion (110 between fill ups on a good day!) and the thought of being soaked in fuel for the remainder of the ride is not nice.

I have seen an argument for squeezing as much in as possible at the end of a ride, especially in the colder months, if the bike is not going to be used every day to leave as little exposed metal inside the tank for condensation to form on and contaminate the fuel. I have always taken this to heart so, like Mr a Nick above I have always filled my Bandit up to the bottom of the filler neck.
That bike had a centre stand so made it easier but did sit astride it when my poorly back meant it was difficult to use the main stand a few months ago. I've never had a problem with staff not letting me fill up on the bike or with my helmet, flip front, on but have heard from many who have.
My new Glee also has a centre stand so will probably do the same with this bike. I hadn't thought about fuel spillage causing problems in the nether regions whilst fueling sitting on the bike but worth bearing in mind as had this several times with leaking tanks on my MXers years ago and quite  painful!

I brim it as much as possible into the filler neck, bike on sidestand. Never understood the logic of sitting on the bike while refuelling but Hello ho :)

No centre stand here either. Always off the 'bike for two reasons

1. You are always off the bike refuelling with the amount of time you have to on each trip.

2. You always have to check for leaks in the tanks as you can't believe how fast the needle goes down.

 lol

I fear my sides may split. Pass the gaffer tape.

For your information it does not have a fuel guage, only an RAC card.
