Lidl Electric Garage Hoist
« on: November 26, 2015, 22:51:34 »
I have considered getting one from time to time & finally availed myself of one this week.

My garage has 2 steel roof frames so I decided to attach it to those somehow. The brackets that come with the hoist are designed for going over something square section, just over 40mm sides.

I had a look on ebay and found someplace selling 40mm x 40mm, 3mm wall box section and did click & collect at Argos so I bought a 1.5m length from them.

I picked it up during lunch break today and couldn't help but laugh at the packaging: they had wrapped corrugated cardboard around it and secured it with copious 'Fragile' tape.... :haha: It became something of an object of curiosity in the office during the afternoon.

My plan is to bolt the box section across the centre span of one of the frames and attach the hoist to that. I have M10 high tensile anchor studs that I think should be up to the job of holding it in place: the hoist is rated to 250kg but I've no intention of trying to lift a whole bike with it..

I'll get it fitted up tomorrow night & take a pic or two for your perusal.

The hoist is now fitted in and working. I've tested the setup to about 120kg & it's looking pretty solid.

Installation went without a hitch....just!! As a result of my meticulous planning & attention to detail, the garage door passes just below the hoist.

Yeah..OK: I dodged a bullet on this... I was so intent on the fitting of the box section & hoist that it just did not occur to me that the door has to open into the same head space that the hoist now occupies....  :violence-smack: There was that awful internal sinking feeling when I stood back to admire my work & the door suddenly loomed in the background daring me to open it... With no small degree of luck, the door passes just under where the cable reinforcments stop so, with the power & controller cables stowed in the rafters, the door opens quite happily.

Here's a pic of it in situ now.

Well it kept bloody quiet about it - have to have words with myself I think!

What did you lift that was 120kg  :shy:

I couldn't possibly say, but it clearly had heavy boots on...

I'm looking at the black control box & wondering if I can bring the wires out through the side instead & give myself a bit more clearance?

Fit a 90° elbow and Kopex across to wall then drop down?

Aye, that could work. Cheers for the suggestion.

I used the hoist for the first time in anger tonight. One of the fork seals on the bandit is weeping a little so I decided to take both forks out & see if I can clean the seals & cure it or not. Having done this before using jacks/axle stands/telekenisis/hoping gravity was on a day off, I thought I'd shift the bike lift under the hoist & give that a whril instead.

I threaded a security chain through the headstock

& gingerly hoisted away...

It flies!!!!

Forks out in no time. I've popped a precautionary axle stand under the engine just in case it lets itself down: I don't thiink it will as it feels pretty solidly engaged.

Now to get a bit of old 35mm & see what I can find in the seals: there are a few chips in the chrome that I'll have a go at cleaning up as well, just to save the sesals getting roughed up.
