2014 v-strom knocking back cylinder?
« on: November 04, 2015, 05:30:22 »
Hi all I've finally got my 2014 v-strom 1000 in for investigation as it has a bad knocking noise since its 1st service only when it is hot ? We have tried changing oils to no effect so it looks like engine out job
I will keep you all informed as to out come as it is all being done on warranty thank F I have told them not to give me it back till knocking noise has gone

Also I have been to hammer & tongue in Warrington asking about a power comander they tune it on a rolling road to your bike they said it will give me
15 bhp mid range
4 to 5bhp  top end it will eliminate all stalling at low rev and back fire now and then that we all seem to have because it's running so lean I know a lad that had his done and he said it's like riding a different bike it's so smooth all the way threw rev range
I have a mivv end can on and putting a k&N filter in when I get bike back and have this done it cost £480 all in I know it's a lot but I hope it will be well worth it

Knocking after the first service doesn't sound good. Makes you wonder if someones forgotten to refill with oil before starting....

15hp midrange sounds an unfeasibly large increase from the pc but I stand to be corrected, let us know how you get on :)

I might be wrong but this sounds like Idle hammer - the cause - play in the clutch/flywheel bearing from poor manufacturers, a well known issue with TL's SV1000s and DL1000s, there is a company that overhauls and cures the problem.

Sounds like it might be idle hammer to me too. Did it start only after the first service?

Roadrocket - I didn't think anyone had come up with a definitive diagnosis of what causes idle hammer, but that the consensus was crankshaft end float. I don't recall anyone coming up with a fix - are you confused with clutch chudder?

Edit: WhereTF did that avatar come from?

FR is assigning Avatars to anyone who doesn't pick one...

My understanding the knocking is play between the flywheel and clutch? The flywheel on the Veek is heavier ? I could be wrong

Hi all thanks for your thoughts? I thought the same but the newer model has a slipper clutch and yes it only started after my 1st service 600 miles  it's a deep knock sounds like big ends but it's not and it's coming from back cylinder pull clutch in still the noise still there put it in gear under load still there if it was clutch it would go ? So stumped me should find out soon I HOPE

Yep, definitely sounds like idle hammer. Mine does it too, but I don't notice it anymore. (Unless someone posts a message about it, then I remember I have it!) It's really weird that it only starts after the first service.

Well hi all and a happy new year  :obscene-drinkingchug:
As promised a update of my v-strom DL1000 2014 knocking noise after 1st service well good and bad news ?
My bike was took in under warranty for investigation and ended up being stripped right down I was showed all parts big ends crank etc etc all was perfect so the bike was put back together every nut bolt torqued to the precise settings and voila  :violence-smack: it now perfect no knocking at all like new again  SO bad news I don't know what was causing it only its a torque not right as a guess I'd say clutch as its a slipper clutch and are torqued very high as when cold was running perfect once hot leaves a couple thou gap creating enough room to make the knocking noise ????

Hi,

Pleased the bike is running good again - and all costs were covered. :)

Just thinking about your plans to swap the end can and chip the bike.

Unless its done by a Suzuki dealer it will affect the remaining warranty and possibly

insurance cover. You may want to check with them first.....

There was a mouse trapped in there knocking to get out. It escaped upon disassembly. You'd be surprised how often that happens.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

'Twas a duck Greywolf.

Looking for its beak. :)

OP I'm glad you're sorted and happy.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.
